Unpopular Opinion: Arsenal should build their squad around Granit Xhaka

[ad_pod ]

When it comes to Granit Xhaka, you feel as though you have to bite your tongue with Arsenal supporters.

The Swiss midfielder is a controversial figure at the Emirates Stadium, deservedly so after some of the toothless performances he’s put in for the Gunners since arriving.

This is a player who can produce moments of brilliance, an asset that saw him score a thunderbolt of a free-kick against Crystal Palace last season.

Yet it’s also a man who, for all the wrong reasons, somehow finds a way to cause havoc. Last season he made two errors that led directly to goals in the Premier League.

One that particularly stood out was against Brighton, dragging down Solly March in a game which ultimately would go onto cost Arsenal their place in the top four.

To say Xhaka has a moment of madness in him would be an understatement but a year on from when he signed a new contract with the club, why would Arsenal want to sell?

There are many reasons. Firstly, the club needs to improve on their measly transfer budget for the summer, whilst secondly, they could do with moving on someone who doesn’t perform to a consistent level.

After being made Arsenal’s second most expensive signing of all time when he first arrived, you’d be forgiven for expecting more from the midfielder.

At international level Xhaka is a leader. He captains his country and is one of their star players, bearing the responsibility of a nation.

But in Islington, it seems as though the pressure gets to him. Only he will know why his performance levels drop to the level they do.

With that in mind, there is a strong argument to suggest Arsenal should get rid of him. Certain fans seemingly want that to happen after reacting to the chance of a potential exit.

In many ways, though, they’re wrong. Xhaka might be a much maligned figure but he’s not one that’ll back down from a fight easily.

After all, this is an individual who comes from a family where his father was imprisoned for protesting in favour of Kosovo’s independence.

But having been the subject of a report linking him with a move to Inter Milan, Arsenal need to keep their 26-year-old midfielder at the club, not cash in.

Xhaka himself has hinted that he’ll be sticking around and although that may not please too many at the Emirates, it’s the right move.

The Switzerland international is a player who in the years to come should be a mainstay in this Gunners unit.

For all too long Arsenal have needed steel and determination. It’s one of the reasons they’ve been so lightweight when it’s come to challenging for major honours.

The tough tackling midfielder is now heading towards the prime of his career and as a result, is someone Unai Emery needs to base his Arsenal project around.

Since the days of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva the north London club have lacked players with a bullish attitude. Xhaka has that in abundance and it would be foolish to sell despite his mistakes.

After the farcical end to Arsenal’s season in Baku, you could make a case for selling a host of the current XI.

Xhaka appears to be one of the leading candidates but by allowing him to leave, Raul Sanllehi and Emery would be making a huge blunder.

It’s perhaps a stretch too far to suggest the former Gladbach man should be captain but he certainly has the tenacity and desire to be in the conversation.

As well as missing steel in midfield, there’s been a real lack of leadership since the Invincibles. Xhaka, however, is someone who stands up when it matters.

After the Europa League final he was the ringleader in thanking the travelling supporters inside the ground. It was a testament to the character he possesses.

Based on that evidence, if the Swiss isn’t the type of person you want at your club you have to be questioned.

Going into a summer where Arsenal need significant investment, selling Xhaka in order to do so would be an error of judgement. They simply have to keep him.

Man City 1-0 Leicester: Vincent Kompany refuses to heed Guardiola’s warning

With 20 minutes left of Manchester City’s penultimate game of the season against Leicester City, Liverpool were as close as they have ever been to the Premier League title. The Citizens were being held at 0-0, and a draw would have left the Reds one point clear going into the last game of the campaign. After 29 years, the end of the drought was in sight.

And then up stepped Vincent Kompany, Mr. Manchester City himself. From 25 yards out, the Belgian let rip on his right foot. As the ball flew into the top corner, Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel had no chance. It was a breathtaking goal from the most unexpected of sources.

In terms of the title race, it was one of the most important goals of the whole campaign. Against the Foxes, the tension in and around the Etihad Stadium was clear for all to see. Everyone knew exactly what was on the line. With both sides playing beatable opposition in their respective final matches of the season, City could not afford to slip up. Fortunately for them, they didn’t.

With the abundance of top quality talent at Pep Guardiola’s disposal, it was a shock that such a strike came from a centre-back. The former Barcelona manager said after the game that he was pleading with his captain not to shoot – according to the Panini Tabloid, he warned from the touchline “No shoot Vinne, no shoot!” – it’s a good job for him that Kompany chose to trust his gut.

Manchester City are one of the best teams on the planet, and a lot of that is down to the Spaniard. His intricate system has taken him to the top in his homeland, Germany and now the Premier League. But sometimes, no matter how fitting the formation and how polished the philosophy, a piece of individual brilliance is needed to make the difference.

Kompany is not even a regular shooter. That staggering strike was one of just five efforts at goal he attempted during the whole term in the league, and only one of two from outside the area. From one side, you could argue that this is because he knows his limitations. He can leave the goalscoring to likes of Sergio Aguero or Raheem Sterling, who netted 57 times between them last season. From the perspective of a football romantic, however, maybe he was just saving the sublime for the perfect moment.

Whether that is the case or not, it was a fitting end to his marvellous career in Manchester. Since his arrival in 2008, the former Hamburg man has been a key part of the City revolution. It is hard to imagine the club being as successful as they have been without Kompany at the heart of their defence and being a leader in the dressing room. He was, after all, named captain at the start of the 2011/12 season, which would end with City’s first ever Premier League title.

As he now returns to Anderlecht to take up a player-manager role, he can take solace in knowing that his strike against Leicester was not only one of the defining moments of a wonderful season, but also the perfect send-off.

Liverpool given golden opportunity in Bruno Fernandes chase

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Liverpool are set to table a new bid for Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes, per Correio da Manhã via Sport Witness.

What’s the word?

The Reds have been linked with a move for the Portugal international, who enjoyed a spectacular season at the Portuguese club in 2018/19.

He scored 32 goals in all competitions and registered a total of 18 assists.

And the Reds are said to hold an advantage over other clubs – both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked, per the report – with Rafael Camacho a potential option in part exchange.

The report states that Sporting have been trying to sign the 19-year-old for months and that he could now be included in a deal that would see Fernandes move to Anfield.

Liverpool have reportedly tabled a bid worth €45m (£40.3m), with Sporting demanding a figure of €70m (£62.6m).

A new offer, however, could be tabled in the next week, with Camacho likely to be included as part of the bid.

Klopp’s secret weapon

Camacho is not of much use to Liverpool right now.

He is clearly a talented young player; he’s a 19-year-old right midfielder and has been capped at various youth levels by Portugal.

However, he’s made just two appearances for the Reds, playing a single minute in a 4-3 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League and the 90 in the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Wolves. In the latter, he was deployed as a right-back.

The teenager is unlikely to make his way into the first-team anytime soon, however, with Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of him in the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp.

The option of offering him to Sporting as part of a deal for Fernandes, then, makes all the sense in the world for the Reds as they look to secure their first senior signing of the summer.

Clearing out deadwood is crucial for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

The Daily Record have reported that six players in Steven Gerrard’s first-team squad are facing exits from Ibrox this summer.

What’s the story?

Players such as Gareth MacAuley, Lee Hodson, Lee Wallace have all left the club after the expiration of their contracts, while the club have also confirmed that goalkeeper Robby McCrorie will head to Scottish Championship side Queen Of The South on a season-long loan.

According to The Record though, the exits won’t stop there, with Kyle Lafferty set for a big money move to Thai Super League champions Buriram United.

The paper say that Lafferty has been told he has no future at Ibrox, with the club also working on ensuring exits for Eros Grezda and Graham Dorrans.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

The club will also listen to offers for goalkeeping duo Jak Alnwick and Wes Foderingham.

With Ryan Hardie also said to be on his way to Blackpool, the list of potential exits stands at six, according to the report.

Is a clear out needed?

Rangers have wasted no time in adding talent to their squad during the transfer window so it makes sense there would have to be some sacrifices from last season’s squad.

Players such as Joe Aribo have added strength to the midfield, negating the need for Dorrans, while new attacking talent Greg Stewart had a much more productive season last year than Lafferty, who mustered just six goals in 30 appearances.

The Gers need to be a lean, mean machine next season to pull in a direction that takes them closer to Celtic.

Depth is needed too of course, but if Gerrard feels that certain players aren’t going to get enough regular action to justify their wages then they must be moved on.

Aston Villa fans elated after Ezri Konsa signs

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa confirmed the signing of Ezri Konsa on Thursday morning, making him their seventh new addition of the summer.

The central defender arrives from Brentford for a reported fee of £12m after the Villans activated his buyout clause.

Villa’s defence now looks to be building up nicely having already added Tyrone Mings, Matt Targett and Kortney Hause to their ranks.

Reacting to the news of a new signing on Twitter, fans of the side were absolutely buzzing with the announcement.

One supporter said he couldn’t wait to see Konsa’s progress next season, labelling him as a typical Dean Smith signing.

A further fan called it a class bit of business whilst another individual said the 21-year-old was a great addition to the squad.

Konsa enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Brentford last term, establishing himself as a ball-playing central defender.

Across 42 Championship outings in 2018/19, he completed 87.7% of his passes. The youngster also won two aerial duels per match and made 3.6 clearances.

The former Bees defender played a part at the U21 European Championships this summer too, albeit from the substitutes bench as he appeared for England in a 3-3 draw with Croatia.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Key statistics that show what Tanguy Ndombele will bring to Spurs

[ad_pod ]

After two totally uneventful transfer windows, Spurs fans finally saw a top talent put pen to paper when Tanguy Ndombele joined for a club-record £53.8m earlier this month – a real statement of intent after the Lilywhites’ stellar Champions League campaign last term.

The former Lyon man won plenty of admirers in 2018/19, including Manchester City, but he eventually opted for a transfer to north London and took the opportunity to work under Mauricio Pochettino.

The 22-year-old told L’Equipe (print edition, via The Evening Standard): “[The decision to join] was deeply thought through. Tottenham have one of the best managers in the world.

“The fact that he wants you, it makes you want to come work with him. He was the one who shifted my decision.”

Indeed, former Southampton boss Pochettino has a reputation for his development of young talent and it seems that Ndombele is hoping his new coach can have a similarly positive impact on his own growth as a player.

That’s not to say that the dynamic midfielder won’t make a big splash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium right off the bat, though.

With Ndombele’s transfer still fresh in mind, Football FanCast have taken a look at three key statistics that illuminate what he can bring to the Premier League next season…

Tackling

Despite the resurgence of the powerful Moussa Sissoko, who played in a deeper role last term, Spurs have lacked some bite and steel at the base of midfield since the January departure of Moussa Dembele.

Prior to his mid-season switch to China, the Belgian had averaged 1.3 tackles per game in the Premier League – the joint-highest for Spurs midfielders – but Ndombele’s defensive output blows his predecessor’s out of the water.

Last term, the 4-cap international completed 1.9 tackles per game on average, so Spurs fans can expect plenty of diligence and tenacity in the defensive phase.

Dribbling

While Ndombele himself told L’Equipe (via The Evening Standard) that he wants to distance himself  from comparisons to Manchester United star Paul Pogba, there are undeniable similarities between the pair in terms of their ability on the ball.

Last term, the Red Devils number 6 completed 1.7 dribbles per game, while the Spurs new boy completed 1.9 and was fouled 2.1 times per game. Only five players were stopped unlawfully more frequently in the Premier League, and not one of those tricksters were playing in Tottenham white.

Powerful, explosive runs from deep are a trademark of Ndombele’s game and his quick-feet will send plenty of defenders into a twist next season.

Before Tanguy Ndombele, Spurs fans haven’t been able to vlog about a transfer since January 2018! Judging by the video below, it’s been worth the wait…

Key passes and assists

The modern game has adapted and evolved rapidly, to the point where the vast majority of players are expected to contribute to multiple phases of play.

Full-backs are asked to get forward and support the attack – to the extent in which a greater importance is placed on marauding qualities rather than fundamental defensive instincts – while defensive midfielders are often as essential in terms of creation as their attacking counterparts, take Fernandinho at Manchester City, Jorginho at Chelsea and Fabinho at Liverpool as a selection of prime examples.

Ndombele will be able to make things happen in the final third despite his expected deployment in front of the back-line, as he demonstrated last season by completing 1.4 key passes per game and chalking up an impressive seven assists.

The former SC Amiens man may have had just one goal to his name but he’ll have no problem creating goalscoring opportunities for the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, who respectively struck 17 and 12 times in the league last term.

Liverpool must show greater versatility next season to compete for the Premier League

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

As the old saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. Jurgen Klopp took that very much to heart last season as Liverpool ended their campaign with their sixth Champions League title. Despite narrowly missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City on the final day, all in all it was an incredibly successful season for those on the red half of Merseyside.

But perhaps there is something the German needs to add, not just to his team but his own game management. The Reds very much centred around the 4-3-3 formation, and very rarely if ever steered away from it. It was a tried and trusted set-up which brought great dividends.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

However, as teams begin to get a bit more cuter to the way the Reds play, the effectiveness of the system will surely take a bit of a hit. And that’s where being a bit more flexible could help the side no end next season. In the games where the Reds are perhaps expected to dominate and win, does Klopp really need the security blanket of having both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in the same team?

The duo are fine players in their own rights, but their strong suit is breaking the play up, not providing a defence-splitting pass or carrying the ball forward with their dribbling. Taking one of the pair out and bringing in someone like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain into central midfield, where he shone at Arsenal, could give them an added impetus in the middle of the park.

Indeed, could the Reds perhaps even switch things completely and go into games with more of a conventional 4-2-3-1 or even a 4-4-2 and simply throws opposition teams off? One of the major successes and highlights of Pep Guardiola’s time in management has been his willingness to try different things and spring a surprise.

In the Premier League – where the element of surprise is often lost considering you play teams twice a season – Klopp could do with adding some variety into his thinking. It could also be the key in rejuvenating his team after their successes last year; that drop in energy levels and desire is often expected after achieving something so great, but Liverpool could well offset that by bringing something completely new to the party next season.

Liverpool transfer target Dani Alves can offer more than just right-back cover

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to a report from The Independent, Dani Alves has been ‘touted’ as a potential target to come in and provide cover for the first-team, whilst also being of benefit due to his vast experience in the game.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Brazil international is without a club after leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season, but is seemingly keen on finding a new club after a post on his official Instagram account.

/B0ZVCi_nMDD/

The right-back wrote: “Looking for a job , where do I put my resume ? Someone let me know if you have time to read!!”

Alves most recently played at the Copa America this summer alongside Liverpool stars Roberto Firmino and Alisson Becker, where the 36-year-old was named as the best player at the tournament after helping Brazil come out victorious.

Wages may prove to be a stumbling block, but Alves would still be a shrewd capture.

What could he offer Jurgen Klopp?

The main problem at Anfield right now is squad depth.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the only recognised right-back after Nathaniel Clyne’s knee injury, whilst Andy Robertson is the only left-back after Alberto Moreno left – Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Alisson, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and Sadio Mane still haven’t begun pre-season either.

James Milner can cover in both full-back positions, but whilst the Englishman is versatile, Alves’ ability to cover a number of positions is very impressive and would be a major help for the Reds.

As per the former Barcelona man’s WhoScored page, the 5 foot 8 star played at right-back, right defensive-midfield, right-midfield, centre-midfield, centre defensive-midfield and as a centre attacking-midfielder last term – even though he specialises specifically at right-back, having such a versatile option would be a huge help for Klopp.

If Alexander-Arnold got injured, Alves could cover. If Milner got injured (God forbid), Alves could cover his midfield position or the full-back areas he’s always available for. If Klopp wanted something different at CAM, Alves is there – the options he presents to the German boss are endless.

Alves recorded three goals and seven assists for PSG in both Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France last term, proving he still has the ability to amass decent numbers despite his age.

The Brazilian appears to be comfortable in a number of positions and would be a huge addition to Klopp’s ranks given his astounding versatility.

Spurs fans want club to sell Victor Wanyama this summer

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans want the club to sell Victor Wanyama to AFC Bournemouth this summer.

The Daily Mail reports that the Cherries are keen on a deal to sign the Kenya international in this transfer window, with the deadline coming ever closer.

Indeed, the window will slam shut on Thursday and the report claims that the Cherries want to bring the former Southampton man to the south coast.

Wanyama battled with injury woes throughout 2018/19, making just 22 appearances in all competitions.

Indeed, only 13 of those came in the Premier League, though just four were starts. He completed the full 90 minutes on just two occasions.

As a result, fans have urged the club to cash in on the 28-year-old, as they look to further freshen their squad.

Indeed, Spurs have strengthened their midfield this summer with the club-record acquisition of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

Man United fans react to huge Jose Mourinho announcement

[ad_pod ]

Sky Sports announced on Saturday morning that Jose Mourinho would be joining the team as a pundit for the 2019-20 campaign.

What’s more, Mourinho will be in the studio for the coverage of two of his former clubs Manchester United and Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Portuguese has been without a position since leaving United in the latter stages of 2018 following a poor start to the campaign.

[ad_pod ]

And it seems that the experienced head coach has no immediate plans to return to the dugout as he prepares to make his debut in the Sky Sports studio.

It will be absolutely fascinating to hear what the former Porto manager has to say as two of his ex-employers lock horns in Manchester on Sunday afternoon.

Plenty of eyes will on current bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard but the shadow of Mourinho will also be looming large.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the United fans in relation to the Mourinho news can be seen below:
