Wayne Rooney showed against Watford why it is a risk to play him in central midfield

Having often played as a central midfielder in the latter stages of his Manchester United career, it was always going to be intriguing to see where Wayne Rooney lined up when he made his return to boyhood club Everton last summer.

While he had often done well in a deeper role for the Red Devils he still wasn’t a regular starter under Jose Mourinho last season, and it was unclear whether he would play in a more advanced role at a smaller club like the Toffees, where he could have more of an impact and be more influential in the final third.

Former boss Ronald Koeman’s thoughts on where the 32-year-old should play were made clear on the first day of the current Premier League season when he lined up on the right-hand side of the two in a 3-4-2-1 system at home to Stoke City, scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory.

The former England international then started as a striker against Manchester City the following week – also getting on the score-sheet – and he continued to play in a range of attacking positions in what was a tough start to the campaign for the Merseyside outfit and Koeman, including on both wings, as an attacking midfielder, centre-forward and support striker.

It was clear where the Dutch boss believed Rooney should be playing and it wasn’t as though he had lots of in-form players in the deeper midfield roles, with neither Morgan Schneiderlin nor Idrissa Gueye replicating the fine performances and strong partnership they had built in the second-half of the 2016/17 campaign.

The 32-year-old scored four goals in nine Premier League matches before Koeman got the boot after the 5-2 defeat at home to Arsenal in October, but he continued to play in attacking positions under caretaker boss David Unsworth, and he made a huge impression in his last match in charge before Sam Allardyce took permanent charge.

The former Manchester United man scored a hat-trick from an attacking midfield position in the much-needed 4-0 win against West Ham United at Goodison Park, including a stunning goal from his own half.

It perhaps showed Allardyce that Rooney could still be hugely influential playing further forward, and it proved to be the case over the next few top flight fixtures as he captained the team in the absence of Phil Jagielka and scored in three successive games against Liverpool, Newcastle United and Swansea City before the busy festive period.

The 32-year-old had 10 goals in 16 Premier League matches at that point, but three straight defeats at the end of 2017 and into 2018, as well as the arrivals of Theo Walcott from Arsenal and Cenk Tosun from Besiktas during the January transfer window, saw the former Three Lions skipper move back to more of a central midfield role.

Rooney came on to play there when James McCarthy suffered a double leg break in the 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion at Goodison Park in January, and he started there again as Allardyce opted for a 4-3-3 system against Leicester City 11 days later.

He showed his defensive weakness by giving away a penalty in the 2-1 win, and he was left on the substitutes’ bench for the 5-1 loss against Arsenal three days later.

Allardyce was now favouring a 4-3-3 formation and the 32-year-old returned to the middle of the park for the 3-1 win against Crystal Palace, and he kept his place for the trip to Watford following a much-improved display with his intelligent use of the ball seeing him named as the man of the match.

The same couldn’t be said at Vicarage Road though, where he looked off the pace and was sloppy in possession throughout, putting his team on the back foot on a number of occasions before he was replaced by Dominic Calvert-Lewin on 82 minutes.

It showed that despite the amount of experience he has, he is perhaps not suited to playing the central midfield role for a team where he has more defensive work to do in that position than he had when playing there for United.

It is proof that it is a risk to play Rooney in central midfield in the remaining stages of the season unless he has two defensively-minded players alongside him in a 4-3-3 system, and it will be interesting to see whether Allardyce sticks with that formation and whether he keeps Rooney in the XI for the trip to Burnley on Saturday given that below-par performance.

The evidence suggest that the 32-year-old needs to be playing further forward for Everton, but with competition from Theo Walcott, Yannick Bolasie, Gylfi Sigurdsson among others, it is difficult to see a spot for him in the starting line-up right now and it gives his manager something of a big conundrum.

Jose Mourinho will surely find it difficult to persuade Chelsea to sell Willian to him

According to reports in The Sun, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign Chelsea attacker Willian this summer, although it could cost £60m to get a player that will turn 30 years of age in August.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Brazilian winger has been in good form for the Premier League holders this season despite their struggles and the fact that he hasn’t always being a regular in the starting XI, and The Sun says his performances haven’t gone unnoticed by Mourinho.

The Sun says the Red Devils tried to bring the 29-year-old to Old Trafford last summer but were told there was no chance he would be leaving, and they have scouted him on a number of occasions during the current campaign.

The report adds that United want Willian, who has come under criticism from Chelsea fans at points this season, to help them in their bid to win the top flight title next term, with the Brazil international only having just over two years left on his contract.

How has Willian done this season?

He has done well considering he has been in and out of the team throughout the campaign.

The 29-year-old has still scored 13 goals and provided a further 10 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions however, including one in the 2-1 win against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge last weekend with a display that saw him praised by his own supporters.

The Brazilian has shown how deadly he can be from set-pieces, while he proved to be a real thorn in the side of Barcelona and could have had a hat-trick in the first leg tie of their Champions League last 16 tie last month having found the net once and hit the woodwork twice.

[ad_pod ]

Would he be a good signing for United?

He certainly could be, yes.

The 29-year-old has usually played in one of the attacking midfield roles behind the striker in Antonio Conte’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system at Chelsea, and he has often made an impact there.

With the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez all available to play on the left at Old Trafford, Willian would be more likely to play on the right where he would be competing with the likes of Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard for a starting spot.

Will they get him?

His price tag and the fact that he turns 30 in August will potentially put the United board off, but if Mourinho really convinces them he can make a difference then it could be a goer.

Of course, persuading Chelsea to sell to one of their Premier League rivals again – following the sale of Nemanja Matic to Old Trafford last summer – might be more difficult.

Leeds United could be dodging a bullet if Mbakogu fails to sign

Leeds United could miss out on signing Jerry Mbakogu as the Carpi striker is being eyed by Udinese, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

What’s the word?

The website cites the print edition of II Gazzatino as saying that Udinese are pondering a swoop for the forward at the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mail, Leeds first took an interest in Mbakogu in the January transfer window, but a move never came to fruition.

The publication states that the Yorkshire outfit could move for the striker when the market reopens, but it seems that they face competition.

Leeds have fallen in their hunt for Premier League promotion as they currently reside 14th in the Championship table, 12 points adrift of the playoff places.

[ad_pod ]

Due to their hardships, the club could make some changes in the summer, but it looks as though they will have a battle on their hands to secure Mbakogu’s signature.

Would it be so bad if they missed out?

If Leeds’ season ends with a whimper then bringing in a new striker could boost the club, but only if he can provide quality in front of goal.

Mbakogu would be a big risk for many reasons; including the fact that he has only managed to score six goals in Serie B this season.

On top of that, the forward is currently on the sidelines with a knee injury and has not found the back of the net since the start of February.

If the Whites want a reliable striker then the Nigerian may not be the best option, particularly as he has no experience in English football.

Manchester City fans take aim at Jesus following humbling defeat

Gabriel Jesus made an instant impact on his arrival to Manchester City from Palmeiras in January last year.

The Brazilian forward scored three goals in his first four outings for the North-West outfit before suffering a metatarsal fracture.

This season, in 31 appearances in all competitions, Jesus has found the back of the net 12 times and has created three assists.

In the 21-year-old’s last three matches, one of which was an international fixture for Brazil, the forward has scored twice.

[ad_pod ]

Throughout the season questions have been raised over whether Jesus should be picked ahead of Sergio Aguero, or if they can play together.

In total, the Brazilian has started 21 games in all competitions, 14 of which have been in the Premier League and six in Europe.

On Wednesday night, Jesus was the main focal point of attack for City in their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Liverpool at Anfield.

However, he failed to make an impact, with The Telegraph claiming that the forward strung just six passes together in the first half, and three of them were kickoffs.

In the end, Pep Guardiola’s side were beaten 3-0 by Liverpool, which means that they have plenty of work to do for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

The Reds comfortably dominated the first half as Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane got on the scoresheet.

Trent Alexander-Arnold received special praise from Liverpool fans for keeping Leroy Sane quiet.

The same could not be said for Jesus, who was criticised by City supporters on Twitter.

Everton fans react to Morgan Schneiderlin’s latest comments on his future

Everton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, rated at £18m by Transfermarkt, has hinted at a summer exit from Goodison Park in his latest interview with beIN SPORTS, and Toffees fans have been quick to react to his comments.

The Frenchman looked as though he would go on to become a star for the Merseyside outfit following some impressive performances in the first-half of 2017 following his move from Manchester United, but he has struggled to find any form whatsoever during the current campaign, and has often been criticised by the Goodison Park faithful for both his displays and his attitude.

Speaking on his future to beIN SPORTS, the 28-year-old said: “If I have to leave Everton, I’d like a different challenge than the Premier League. I’ve already been to Southampton, Manchester United and Everton. I don’t see myself going anywhere else in England.”

The latest quotes won’t have impressed those Everton supporters that have been on his back this term, and they were quick to give their thoughts on social media.

While one simply said “cheerio then, Morgan”, another described him as being “never an Everton-type player”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Leeds fans blast Pennington performance

Leeds’ torrid run continued on Friday night with a 1-0 defeat at Villa Park, and fans are furious with defender Matthew Pennington’s performance.

Despite a somewhat spirited performance in the second half, Leeds fans were yet again left disappointed on Friday night, as their side’s lifeless first half performance made life easy for Aston Villa.

Leeds have won just twice since Paul Heckingbottom arrived, and although scoring goals has been a problem, the side’s soft centre and leaky defence has infuriated fans perhaps more than anything else.

Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper have been far from perfect this season, but nonetheless their injuries are a massive loss, as Heckingbottom was forced to start the young pairing of Matthew Pennington and Paudie O’Connor on Friday.

While the inexperienced O’Connor has drawn plenty of plaudits since his emergence last week, fans are blasting Pennington for his performance.

The 23 year-old, on loan from Everton, hasn’t even come close to what fans expected from a Premier league defender, and his weaknesses were magnified on Friday when Lewis Grabban comfortably rose above him to head home the winner.

Manchester City fans take to Twitter as Salah sneaks ahead of De Bruyne to win PFA Player of the Year

If Kevin De Bruyne had been voted PFA Player of the Year, it would have been no surprise given his influence in Manchester City’s team this season.

In fact, during the majority of the campaign, many thought that the Belgium international was a shoe-in for the individual award.

However, on Sunday evening at a ceremony in Grosvenor House Hotel in London, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was handed the gong.

The Egyptian international is leading the race for the Golden Boot with 31 Premier League goals to his name, but his overall tally is 41 in all competitions.

The 25-year-old has an opportunity to win the Champions League with Liverpool, but they need to get past Roma over two legs in order to reach the showpiece in Kiev.

In contrast, De Bruyne already has silverware under his belt this season as he is a Carabao Cup winner and Premier League champion.

The midfielder has been a vital cog in Man City’s team having netted 12 goals and created 19 assists in all competitions.

Despite the Belgian’s consistency, it was Salah who received more votes from his peers – an outcome that was predicted by our readers in a poll.

The majority of City fans took the news well, although unsurprisingly, they felt that their man should have claimed the gong.

Shahid Khan’s move to buy Wembley Stadium would be a great thing for England fans

In a shock announcement on Thursday, the Football Association have revealed that they are considering selling Wembley Stadium. The news comes after the American billionaire who owns Fulham, car parts tycoon Shahid Khan, tabled a bid believed to be between £500million-£800million for the national stadium.

The Evening Standard reported on the story, just as the board of English football’s governing body is due to consider the offer and make a decision.

An FA spokeswoman kept their statement on the matter short and to the point, saying: “We can confirm that The FA has received an offer to buy Wembley Stadium.”

But while the news has come as a shock to many within the game, if the sale goes through it could well turn out to be excellent news for a huge portion of England fans.

Khan doesn’t just own The Cottagers. The Florida-based businessman also counts NFL outfit Jacksonville Jaguars as part of his portfolio of sporting franchises. He has long wanted to transport the Jags’ home games to London, but needs a stadium to back up the move. If the proposed Wembley purchase goes through, the relocation looks extremely probable.

Should the NFL reject the move though, it’s thought that Khan could even attempt to move another NFL club to London. So any sale to Khan would likely see American Football being played at Wembley. The NFL season lasts from September to February and would see an interruption to some England’s home games.

That’s where the good news comes in. While plans are yet to be announced, there’s a very good chance that the games that would have been played at Wembley will be moved to other stadiums across the country instead. Just as they were when the stadium was being rebuilt.

The ‘England on Tour’ idea allowed fans from all across the country to watch their national teams in friendlies and qualifiers without having to make long and often expensive trips to London and back. Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Derby, Sunderland and even Ipswich saw Three Lions action between 2001 and 2007.

On a club level, it’s highly likely that FA Cup semi-finals will go back to neutral grounds, saving Wembley Stadium for the final in a move that would no doubt please most football fans, who think that Wembley-based semis take the shine of the final appearance.

Not everyone will be a fan of the move, of course. Many will argue that the national football stadium should not be in private hands and should remain publicly owned. Those backing the potential deal though will argue that the hundreds of millions of pounds earmarked for grassroots football more than makes up for any ownership issues.

Investments of this scale in grassroots are almost unprecedented. The money is ring-fenced too, meaning every penny that’s supposed to make its way to pitches, coaches and young players will have to do just that by law.

Selling Wembley Stadium to a private investor might not sound like a great move for English football, but if the sale to Khan goes through, fans of the national side might well get to see their heroes a lot closer to home. They should also see an eventual improvement in the side’s performance once the benefits from the revolutionary investment in grassroots football begins to be felt.

Wilshere’s new contract with Arsenal gets mixed reaction from fans

Arsenal are on the verge of signing Jack Wilshere to a new three year contract, according to reports in The Mirror.

The veteran midfielder’s previous contract was set to expire in the Summer and talks had stalled on a new deal with the club initially asking the Englishman to take a pay-cut if he were to stay in North London.

But in the latest development revealed by Mirror Sport, Arsenal have improved their initial offer leading to a resumption in dialogue with Wilshere’s camp and negotiations are now believed to be in an advanced stage.

Outgoing Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has said he is ‘convinced’ Wilshere will stay.

“I am convinced, like I was always, that his future is here.

“It was always my wish and I think it will happen, yes.”

The England midfielder, 26, is the club’s second longest serving player after Aaron Ramsey, and there has been some speculation from fans about the club’s reasoning behind making Wilshere an improved offer with a certain few believing the decision directly affects the Welshman’s future at the club.

West Ham fans discuss transfer plans

West Ham United are expected to be active this summer as the club look to avoid a repeat of this season, which saw them dragged into a relegation battle in the Premier League.

The Hammers are now safe from the drop, but the board will surely want to push forward next season, and investment is needed following a dry January transfer window.

It is understood that Javier Hernandez will leave the club at the end of the season, whilst the future of Andy Carroll is believed to be far from clear.

A selection of West Ham fans, however, do not believe that signing a new striker should be the club’s priority in this summer’s transfer window.

That said, one supporter pointed out that it would be foolish for the team to once again rely on Marko Arnautovic to score the majority of the goals during the 2017-18 campaign.
