John Holder accuses ECB of being 'disingenuous' over racial discrimination claim

Ismail Dawood equally unimpressed by ECB comments, but governing body rejects allegations of ‘institutional racism’

John Holder has dismissed ECB comments claiming he has withdrawn his claim of racial discrimination against them as “disingenuous” and vowed to never work for the organisation again.Holder and Ismail Dawood had launched a legal challenge against the ECB suggesting that their careers as umpires had been adversely affected by institutional racism at the ECB.But with the law stating that any such claim has to be brought within three months of the termination of employment, Holder and Dawood were always unlikely to prevail. Dawood was last on the ECB’s reserve umpire list in 2014; Holder’s last game was in 2009. They reasoned, however, that by bringing the case they could highlight the issues they had faced and hoped they may win an exemption on the basis of public interest. At a mediation meeting a week ago, offered by the ECB at the umpires’ request, it is understood the ECB offered an acknowledgement that they had fallen short of the standards they set themselves. They stopped short of an apology, however, and no compensation was offered. Both Holder and Dawood rejected the “acknowledgement” and what they described as the “token roles” they were offered and declined to sign any non-disclosure agreement.Holder and Dawood subsequently withdrew their employment claim as pursuing it further could have exposed them to a claim for costs from the ECB. Their claim to the Equality and Human Rights Commission remains open, however, and ECB comments made to the BBC which they believe misrepresented the situation have left them incensed. Indeed, it is understood Holder emailed Neil Snowball, the managing director of county cricket, and withdrew his offer of working with the ECB.Related

John Holder sues ECB over alleged racial discrimination

The comments from the ECB made to the BBC were: “The ECB has been notified that John Holder and Ismail Dawood have withdrawn their employment claims against the ECB without payment of compensation or costs. The ECB is committed to a world-class diverse and inclusive officiating system, with opportunities for all. The ECB appreciates Mr Holder and Mr Dawood’s engagement in addressing these matters, and will now discuss with Mr Holder his interest in contributing to its ongoing review of officiating.”Holder told ESPNcricinfo: “Our case against the ECB has been beaten on a legal technicality. I haven’t withdrawn any of the claims I made.”The tone of the ECB’s statement would give the uninvolved reader the impression that we have accepted their version of events and backed down. This is not the case at all. We remain convinced that the ECB is institutionally racist.”Having read that statement, I knew I couldn’t work with these people any more. There is no trust. They aren’t looking to learn from my experiences; they are looking to silence me and give the impression that things have been resolved. That is misleading and disingenuous.”Dawood was equally unimpressed. “We were offered token roles to work with Neil Snowball at the ECB which were an insult to us and the many others that have suffered at the hands of the ECB,” he told ESPNcricinfo.”Tom Harrison talks about a zero tolerance attitude towards racism while he courts the press and yet the ECB have acknowledged they have fallen below their own standards in this regard. Where is the accountability? It’s a non-existent word at the ECB.”The ECB issued a statement on Friday, which said: “We do not agree with the accusation that the ECB is institutionally racist, but we do recognise that the stories and insight, shared by many within cricket in the last 12 months, reflect that as a sport we need to do more to ensure that everyone feels welcome.”We are in the process of undertaking an independent review of officiating and are committed to acting on its findings to ensure that the game is open and accessible. We have invited John and Ismail to share their experiences as part of that process.”The review is one of a number of initiatives including the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket that we have put in place to explore issues that exist around racism and equality and to tackle a number of topics that people have raised in the past 12 months.”The ECB has now commissioned a review, with Board oversight, to look at how we can reform our approach to managing Match Officials. This will set out actions as to how we can improve our systems and processes to increase the diversity of umpiring, inspire the next generation of umpires and match referees, have a world class umpiring programme and ensure a culture of inclusivity and fairness throughout the umpiring system.”Former Yorkshire spinner Azeem Rafiq also alleged “institutional racism” at the county, who have been carrying out an investigation into the claims. The ECB founded an independent commission for equity in cricket, designed to examine issues relating to race and equity, in November. The latest comments from Holder and Dawood come just two days after England and New Zealand players stood in a ‘moment of unity’ before the start of play in the first Test at Lord’s with England players wearing training T-shirts which denounced various forms of discrimination.Later on Wednesday, debutant England seamer Ollie Robinson issued an apology after historic tweets he posted as a teenager in 2012 and 2013 emerged, which he acknowledged were “racist and sexist” in nature. The ECB committed to launching a full investigation while also facing calls to increase efforts to assess players’ social media history.

Alongside Gnonto: £3.1m per year Leeds United ace now ready to pen new deal

Leeds United are set to be handed another boost as it has emerged that a second first team star is ready to pen fresh terms with the Championship side to extend his time at Elland Road.

Wilfried Gnonto signs new deal

12 months on from trying to force his way out of Elland Road, 20-year-old forward Wilfried Gnonto agreed a new contract with Daniel Farke’s side. The Italy international was tipped to leave the club over the summer following Leeds’ failure to secure an instant return to the Premier League, but despite the exits of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, Gnonto remained in Yorkshire.

Now, he is set to do so for another four years, having agreed a deal to keep him at Elland Road until 2028, the club announced on transfer deadline day.

“It feels really good. I’m really happy for this extension. I’m really happy to be here and obviously I can’t wait to play in front of the fans again”, Gnonto told Leeds fans after penning his new deal. “I’ve been here two years now and I’m going into my third season, I’m really happy to be here.

“It’s been, since the start, I can say my second home. I really enjoyed being here and with the ambition in the club, I see my future here. I feel like it’s important for me to find some consistency and I feel like the right place to do it this year. So I’m really happy and I can’t wait to keep going with it.”

And in yet more good news for Leeds fans, another key figure may be set to follow suit and pen a new contract in Yorkshire.

Defender open to Leeds contract extension

That comes as one report claims that defender Junior Firpo has given the “green light” to Leeds to proceed with contract negotiations to keep him at Elland Road. The flying full back, who was signed from Barcelona in 2021, is down to the final months of his £60,000 a week (£3.1m per year) deal in Yorkshire, and is yet to pen fresh terms.

Though he struggled in the Premier League, the Dominican Republic international has excelled in the Championship under Farke, drawing plenty of praise from his manager.

“I never made a secret out of it that I think that Junior Firpo on this level is an outstanding full-back, with his experience, with his technical ability, with his strength going forward”, the Leeds boss explained over the summer.

Leeds ace was worth just £1.3m when Farke joined, now he's worth 2207% more

Daniel Farke helped transform this Leeds United star into a top drawer player.

ByKelan Sarson Sep 13, 2024

Now, TEAMtalk report that the fullback is “open to extending his stay at Leeds United” and ready to sign a new contract, though he wants to “first understand the intentions and ambitions of the club” before committing the best part of his career to the Whites.

Were Firpo to follow Gnonto in extending his stay at Elland Road, it would come as a massive boost to Farke’s side, with Leeds in danger of losing him for nothing as things stand and Firpo free to enter into talks with foreign clubs from January 1st. Much may depend on how the early season pans out for Leeds, and the full back is sure to have a major say in that.

Harmanpreet Kaur: Harleen Deol's catch a reflection of India's improved fielding under Abhay Sharma

“An effort like this can lift the team’s morale immensely because when you play a team sport, you require momentum as a unit”

Harmanpreet Kaur has described Harleen Deol’s stunning catch to dismiss England’s Amy Jones in the first T20I on Friday as a “brilliant” effort that was reflective of the Indian team’s renewed focus on more agile performances under fielding coach Abhay Sharma. In an over that involved three superlative pieces of fielding – two catches, by Kaur and Deol, and a stumping by Richa Ghosh – India sent back two set England batters – Nat Sciver and Jones – and the in-form Sophia Dunkley. After Kaur caught Sciver off the second ball of the 19th over to break the duo’s 42-ball 78 stand, Deol pulled off a breathtaking solo effort of her own, by the wide long-off boundary.Related

Harmanpreet Kaur: Covid-19 and groin injury hampered England tour preparations

Catching Jones’ powerfully struck shot overhead inches inside the rope, Deol flung the ball in the air before the momentum carried her on the other side of the boundary. She, however, recovered swiftly enough to throw herself back inside the rope, catching the ball in the air in time, diving forward, and then rolling over sideways to complete a catch that has since earned praise from the opposition team and has gone viral on social media.”Yes, definitely [it’s one of the best catches I’ve ever seen],” Kaur, the India T20I captain, said on Saturday. “We are working a lot on our fielding department and I’m really happy the way we fielded yesterday. It’s a great positive I can see in the game. It was a great effort from her. Credit goes to all our support staff and our team members who are putting efforts during our fielding sessions.”Abhay sir,” she said, “has been working with us for a while now. The little differences in awareness we have seen in our fielding – we had been putting a fair bit of effort earlier too – the small adjustments he has been making in every player’s fielding, focusing on individual fielding sessions [has been paying off].”And something I particularly like about his approach – judging what areas a player needs to better their fielding in. The field placements and the work we have been putting in as a team we are getting more results out of them day by day. It’s a great positive.”Kaur, who herself took an immaculately timed forward-diving catch at long-on to remove half-centurion Sciver, with the ball dipping on her, praised India’s overall ground fielding and catching in the first T20I. India lost the match by 18 runs via the DLS method but Kaur said India’s improved fielding boded well for the team.

“[An effort like this] helps lift the team’s morale immensely because when you play a team sport, you require momentum as a unit and it can come from any player,” Kaur said. “Once I took that catch, it created an energy within the team and then Harleen also took a brilliant catch. To create that kind of an energy you have to put in extra effort.”Throughout the game our ground fielding was also quite good; we saved quite a few runs that that effort and took a few brilliant catches. It’s a great sign that we are showing improvement in our fielding.”She also commended pacer Shikha Pandey, who delivered the eventful 19th over for India and finished with eventual figures of 3 for 22, the best returns from the side on the night.”Shikha is the most experienced bowler in our team,” Kaur said. “Every time out team needs her to deliver, she has risen to the occasion. I’m happy she is enjoying her bowling at the moment, bowling the way she should be, without overthinking. That’s a positive sign for us.”India’s four-pronged spin attack, however, picked just two wickets between them, conceding 117 from their combined 13 overs. Both Sciver and Jones scored heavily against them.Harmanpreet Kaur on Shikha Pandey: ‘Every time our team needs her to deliver, she has risen to the occasion’•Getty Images

“As regards spin, sometimes when playing on a flat track, spinners tend to bowl one or two boundary balls in an over,” Kaur said. “So the onus then falls on the fielding unit to cut down on the runs and support our bowlers. It’s just a matter of one or two balls that you need to focus more when delivering them. We are working on that aspect as a team.”Player of the Match Sciver said after the game that in the lead-up to the multi-format series, England had done their “homework” to face wristspinner Poonam Yadav, India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is. On Friday, Yadav picked 4-0-32-1, having had opener Tammy Beaumont caught in the ninth over. Moments after the wicket, though, Kaur, seemingly concerned, was seen involved in an animated conversation with Yadav.”Poonam is a wicket-taking bowler for our team,” Kaur said, elaborating on the nature of the discussion that transpired after Beaumont’s wicket. “For us, it’s very important that she backs her own strengths. If she is unable to do that and instead tries what other bowlers may be doing, which may be advantageous to them, it may not always be useful for her.”So, for us, it’s vital she sticks to her strengths such giving the ball a lot of loop in the air, holding the ball, looking for turn. If she deviates from these aspects and instead tries bowling the faster one or do something extra, we don’t get much advantage out of such deliveries from her.”What you said [about the discussion with Poonam after the wicket] – she had tried out two-three faster deliveries, trying to beat them with pace, which is not possible, because her strength is making the ball turn in air. That’s what we want her to stick to because facing her is not easy [when she bowls to her strengths].”As you mentioned, opposition teams have been practising to play her better. In a way, it’s also a positive thing for us that opposition teams are working on the game plans of specific players in our team. My advice to Poonam has been that she doesn’t forego her strengths because that’s what have brought her to where she is today.”India next play England on Sunday, in Hove, in the penultimate fixture of their seven-match tour. With the hosts leading the points tally 8-4, and only two T20Is remaining, Kaur, who was yet to make a 20-plus score on the tour, was hopeful India’s batting would come good as the visitors look to get back to winning ways.”Look, every time we go on the field, victory remains our objective,” Kaur said. “Even yesterday, our approach was anchored on winning. We were playing as per the DLS method. Unfortunately, we lost two-three wickets in a collapse. Our approach in the next two games will also be hinged on victory. The wickets are really good to bat on. Fielding first a team may end up conceding 10-15 runs but you can cover that through your batting.”

Here's a detailed look at Ipswich Town's top 10 earners… 10 Leif Davis £25,000 per week

Five Ipswich Town players pick up a yearly salary of £1.3m per season, including star left-back Leif Davis.

Signed from Leeds United when the club were in League One, Davis has gone from strength to strength under McKenna and signed his latest contract in 2024.

9 Jacob Greaves £25,000 per week

Also on the same salary is centre-back Jacob Greaves, who Ipswich signed from Hull City after they won promotion to the Premier League.

Greaves signed a five-year deal at Portman Road and has been a regular at the back for the club.

8 George Hirst £27,500 per week

Forward George Hirst initially joined Ipswich Town on loan in January 2023, and after helping the club into the Championship, made his move from Leicester City a permanent one.

Since then, Hirst has impressed in the second and top tiers and is under contract until 2027.

7 Sam Morsy £30,000 per week

Club captain Sam Morsy has been with Ipswich Town since 2021 and has played a key role in taking the club from League One to the Premier League.

The Egyptian hasn’t looked back since leaving Middlesbrough and was rewarded with a new two-year deal in 2024.

6 Ben Johnson £30,000 per week

Ipswich Town were able to offer Ben Johnson a four-year contract on just over £1.5m per season after he left West Ham as a free agent in 2024.

The versatile defender has been in and out of McKenna’s starting line ups after making more than 100 senior appearances for the Hammers.

5 Arijanet Muric £35,000 per week

After Burnley and Ipswich swapped divisions in 2024, goalkeeper Arijanet Muric remained in the Premier League with the Tractor Boys.

The Kosovo international signed a four-year deal at Portman Road on £35,000 per week but has already made numerous errors under McKenna.

4 Dara O’Shea £35,000 per week

Another summer signing on the same wage is defender Dara O’Shea, with the Irishman arriving from West Brom in an initial £12m transfer.

A centre-back who can also play as a right-back, O’Shea is under contract until 2029.

3 Jens Cajuste £35,000 per week

Jens Cajuste was another who made the move to Portman Road in 2024, joining on loan from Italian giants Napoli.

A Sweden international, Cajuste picks up £1.82m a year and Ipswich also have an option to make a deal permanent at the end of the season.

2 Axel Tuanzebe £40,000 per week

Axel Tuanzebe

After struggling to make an impact at Manchester United and following various loan spells, Ipswich Town signed Axel Tuanzebe on a free transfer in 2023.

The defender impressed and helped the Tractor Boys win promotion to the top flight, which resulted in his contract being extended by a further 12 months.

1 Kalvin Phillips £150,000 per week

The current top earner at Ipswich Town is loanee Kalvin Phillips, who was arguably the Tractor Boys’ biggest signing of the summer.

Signed from Manchester City for the 2024/25 campaign, the holding midfielder picks up just under £8m a year, although there is no option to buy in a loan deal.

Celtic rejected £115m star in the making for £1m, Turnbull arrived instead

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was able to make further changes to his playing squad in the recent summer transfer window, which officially slammed shut last month.

It was his second summer in charge of the Hoops, during his second stint in Glasgow, and the board backed him in the transfer market with a number of signings.

Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo, Alex Valle, Kasper Schmeichel, Viljami Sinisalo, Luke McCowan, Arne Engels, and Auston Trusty were all brought in by the Scottish giants.

They did, however, lose star midfielder Matt O’Riley. The Denmark international completed a move to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported fee of more than £25m.

Rodgers also cashed in on some of the fringe players in his squad. Mikey Johnston, Sead Haksabanovic, Hyeon-gyu Oh, and Tomoki Iwata were all allowed to leave on permanent deals to make room for new additions.

That came after the Hoops boss had been able to ditch David Turnbull, Liel Abada, and Yosuke Ideguchi on permanent deals during the January transfer window.

David Turnbull's time with Celtic

In the summer of 2020, Celtic swooped to sign the attacking midfielder from Motherwell in a deal that was reportedly worth up to £3.25m – a record fee for their Scottish Premiership rivals.

The Bhoys wanted to sign the Scottish youngster in the summer of 2019 but it was revealed that he needed to have surgery on a knee injury, which ended up restricting him to two appearances in the 2019/20 campaign, and they came back the following year to finally complete a deal.

Turnbull hit the ground running at Parkhead with a return of eight goals and seven assists from central midfield in 31 Premiership appearances for Celtic during the 2020/21 season.

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull.

However, Ange Postecoglou arrived at the club in the summer of 2021 and the Australian’s 4-3-3 system limited the Scotland international’s involvement.

In the manager’s two seasons with Celtic, Turnbull only started 26 Premiership matches – four fewer than he managed in his debut campaign with the Scottish giants.

Rodgers replaced Postecoglou in the dugout in the summer of 2023 but the Northern Irish head coach’s arrival did not result in regular starts for the midfielder.

As you can see in the table above, Turnbull started nine times and came off the bench as a substitute in seven games during the first half of last season, contributing with an eye-catching seven goals.

Despite his impressive goalscoring record for Celtic, Rodgers decided that the central midfielder was surplus to requirements in the January transfer window.

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull.

The 25-year-old dynamo eventually secured a permanent exit from Parkhead as Championship side Cardiff City swooped in to sign him for a reported fee of £2m, which meant that the club made a loss on the deal that they agreed with Motherwell.

Things could have been different for Celtic, however, if they had signed a player they had recommended to them before they opted to sign Turnbull.

Celtic's chance to sign Moises Caicedo

In the summer of 2023, the Daily Mail reported that the Hoops were once told to swoop for Moises Caicedo, who was playing for Independiente del Valle in Ecuador at the time, in 2020.

A talent spotter for the Scottish giants told Neil Lennon to sign the teenage defensive midfielder and claimed that he would have been available for a fee of around £1m at the time.

Celtic did have money to spend that summer. They spent £4.5m on Vasilis Barkas, £5m on Albian Ajeti, and the aforementioned £3.25m on Turnbull, which shows that they would not have had any problems spending £1m on Caicedo.

However, for reasons unknown, Lennon and the club did not opt to act upon that recommendation and, ultimately, passed up on the chance to sign the midfielder for a fee of just £1m – signing Turnbull as their only central midfield addition that summer instead.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Less than one year later, Brighton & Hove Albion swooped to agree a £4m deal with Independiente del Valle, and he spent six months on loan with Beerschot VA in Belgium before his breakthrough in England.

Since his emergence down south, the 22-year-old star has gone from strength to strength and appears to be one that got away for the Scottish side.

Moises Caicedo's market value

In the summer of 2023, Premier League giants Chelsea agreed a staggering, British-record, transfer fee of £115m to sign the Ecuador international from Brighton.

This means that a player Celtic could have signed for £1m in 2020 was then worth £114m more just three years later, which suggests that they missed out on the chance to develop and sell-on a hugely talented player who could have made the club a gigantic profit.

Instead, Lennon signed Turnbull and the Scottish midfielder struggled to start games on a regular basis under Postecoglou and Rodgers before being sold for a loss.

Caicedo made eight Premier League appearances, and scored one goal, just 18 months on from when Celtic were told to pursue him, as Brighton integrated him into their side.

The battler, who was described as “exceptional” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, went on to play 53 games in all competitions for the Seagulls between the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns, before Chelsea swooped in for him in 2023.

He started 33 matches in the Premier League for the Blues last season and showcased his defensive quality with 3.7 tackles and interceptions per game, winning 56% of his duels in total.

As you can see in the table above, Caicedo has also enjoyed a strong start to the current campaign for Chelsea, with an incredible 6.0 tackles and interceptions per match.

For context, no Celtic midfielder has averaged more than 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game in the Premiership so far this season, which shows that the £115m star is an outstanding defensive talent who can consistently win the ball back for his side.

His superb performances in the English top-flight, his incredible value, and Turnbull’s struggles at Parkhead, suggest that Caicedo is one that got away for the Hoops.

Hampshire climbed off the foot of the Vitality Blast South Group with a crushing 75-run victory over high-flying Somerset at the Ageas Bowl. The win was the second in succession for the Hawks, who bowled superbly to dismiss the visitors for 100 with young quick Scott Currie finishing with 4 for 24 after wicketkeeper Lewis McManus earlier hit a career-best 60 not out.Defeat for Somerset, who were without Tom Banton, Craig Overton, Tom Abell and Lewis Gregory due to international duty and injury, hinders their hopes of a top-four finish on a difficult evening where they struggled with the ball, the bat and in the field at the Ageas Bowl.Hampshire, who were also missing key men in skipper James Vince and Liam Dawson, recovered well after being 22 for 3 inside the powerplay with McManus and Joe Weatherley hitting half-centuries to help their side to a competitive score of 175 for 6.Related

But that was as good as it got for Somerset, as Colin de Grandhomme, fresh from his 174 against Surrey earlier this week, and Weatherley rebuilt the innings.with a 52-run stand that saw the New Zealand all-rounder dropped on 17 by Tom Lammonby.De Grandhomme clubbed two sixes and stroked two boundaries for his 28 off 19 balls before chipping Lewis Goldsworthy to James Hildreth at mid-wicket.Weatherley brought up his 50 with a huge six over fine leg before falling to the very next ball, one of three shots to clear the rope in his 35-ball innings.McManus continued where Weatherley left off as he hammered 60 from just 36 deliveries before Somerset got off to a disastrous start when in-form New Zealand opener Devon Conway fell second- ball as stand-in skipper Chris Wood found the edge of his bat and McManus took a simple catch.Exciting young batsman Smeed looked in good touch with 15 runs of nine balls but his attempt to hit a big six off Brad Wheal only found the hands of Mason Crane at cover.Somerset then lost their last eight wickets for 76 runs with Currie ripping through the rest of the top order, dismissing James Hildreth and Lewis Goldsworthy before the spin of Crane and Short reduced the visitors to 70 for 6.Currie and Wheal then wrapped up the tail with Roelof van der Merwe, with 25, the only batsman to show any real resistance as the Hawks wrapped up victory with 24 balls to spare.
