Wolves must regret selling a "superstar" who’s now even better than Cunha

It’s fair to say Wolverhampton Wanderers games this season in the Premier League haven’t exactly been short of talking points, with a hefty 54 strikes tallied up in terms of goals scored and goals conceded across their 13-game stretch.

To add more context, the likes of Everton and Crystal Palace only have 31 and 29 in contrast, but both those sides certainly have meaner defences, as Gary O’Neil’s men have leaked a worrying 32 strikes when examining their bumper total.

O’Neil will know that the likes of Matheus Cunha will need to continue to put in top-drawer displays in attack for his side to stand a fighting chance at survival, away from obviously shoring up at the back more effectively.

Matheus Cunha's performances this season

Alongside Jorgen Strand Larsen, who has a healthy goal return of six in Premier League action, Cunha has also been a reliable source of entertainment for supporters at Molineux with the Brazilian managing seven of his own goals alongside three assists.

Cunha was a man-possessed away at Craven Cottage before a sobering 4-2 defeat to AFC Bournemouth jolted his team back to reality, with two goals and one assist coming his way from an exceptional 89 minutes versus Marco Silva’s Fulham in a comprehensive 4-1 win.

The South American ace did have a quiet game by his standards in that aforementioned defeat to the Cherries, with possession squandered a costly 21 times not helping his side’s cause, but there’s no doubt in his mind that he can bounce back when O’Neil’s team travel to Everton on Wednesday evening.

The Premier League strugglers will just hope they don’t over-rely on the 25-year-old’s magic, especially if he falls foul of a prolonged drop in form down the line, with one former Wolves ace arguably more tricky and influential for his current employers than Cunha is right now back in England.

Wolves flop who is now even better than Cunha

Of course, the electric Old Gold number ten is currently basking in his superb form, and rightly so, but it’s not always been plain sailing for the 6-foot ace at Molineux.

Cunha only managed to fire home two strikes from 17 Premier League games during his debut season at the club, before developing into the stunning performer he is today for the West Midlands outfit.

Sadly, the same patience wasn’t shown to Pedro Goncalves when he was on the books at Molineux.

Pedro Goncalves of Sporting CP

Now, the Portuguese attacker has become a “superstar” at Sporting CP according to journalist Jack Collins, despite making just one meagre senior appearance for his ex-employers.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

The Old Gold were somewhat powerless to Goncalves returning back to his native country in 2019, with a move away credited to the winger wanting more senior game time, but Wolves will wish they had put up more of a lasting fight when you consider his numbers for Sporting this campaign alone.

This campaign, the scintillating winger has managed to better Cunha’s numbers by one, with Goncalves picking up one of those assists in the Champions League when Sporting toppled Manchester City 4-1 under the expertise of former manager Ruben Amorim.

In total, the 5 foot 8 star has a ridiculous 81 goals and 57 assists next to his name since joining the Lisbon-based giants, with Wolves left to ponder what could have been if Goncalves had decided to stay put.

He could have filled the void perfectly when Pedro Neto departed this summer, but O’Neil will be content that he has Cunha to call upon as a similar style maverick in attack, even if Goncalves has surpassed the Brazilian this campaign when fit.

Hanuma Vihari will link up with Abahani Limited after taking a short break to go home to Hyderabad•BCCI

Hanuma Vihari and Abhimanyu Easwaran are among seven Indian players who are taking part, for varying durations, in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL), Bangladesh’s only List A (50-over) competition. The others are Parvez Rasool, Baba Aparajith, Ashok Menaria, Chirag Jani and Gurinder Singh. All of them were unsold at the February auction ahead of IPL 2022.Vihari, who was a part of India’s Test XI, which completed a 2-0 sweep over Sri Lanka in Mohali and Bengaluru, will head home to Hyderabad for a short break before traveling to Dhaka. He is expected to join his team, Abahani Limited, later this week. He will miss the first three games of the season for the team, and Afghanistan middle-order batter Najibullah Zadran has been signed up by the club for those games.Easwaran, captain of the Bengal first-class side in India’s domestic circuit and also on the fringes of the national Test side, which he has been with as a reserve in recent times, will turn out for Prime Bank. Rasool will play for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi, Aparajith for Rupganj Tigers, Menaria for Khelaghar, Jani for Legends of Rupganj, and Gurinder for Gazi Group Cricketers.Vihari, Easwaran, Aparajith, Menaria and Rasool aren’t strangers to the DPL, having taken part in it before Covid-19 struck in 2019-2020. Other prominent Indian players, like Dinesh Karthik, Manoj Tiwary and Yusuf Pathan, have also played in the DPL in the past. This season, all the participating teams have been allowed one overseas player. Apart from the Indians, Pakistan veteran Mohammad Hafeez will play for Mohammedan Sporting and Zimbabwe allrounder Sikandar Raza will turn out for Shinepukur. The premier Bangladeshi cricketers are on tour in South Africa•AFP

Traditionally a 50-overs tournament, the DPL was tweaked to a T20 format last year to give national players game time in preparation for the T20 World Cup in late 2021. That was also the only year when no foreign players were brought in.The DPL features 11 teams, which will play each other once in a round-robin format. The top six teams then play each other in the Super League once. The bottom two teams from the league phase will be relegated to Dhaka’s first division league. The addition of several overseas players adds some heft to a competition that will largely be devoid of local star power, as the national team is currently in South Africa preparing for three ODIs and two Tests. With the tour set to end on April 12, it’s likely the country’s top players will only be available for the last two weeks of the competition.April to September is typically seen as a free window for India’s domestic players that don’t have IPL teams. While some head to Bangladesh for the DPL, some others, like Faiz Fazal, have featured in club cricket in the UK. This season, too, Cheteshwar Pujara will play for Sussex in the English county circuit. This year, the BCCI is in the process of concluding the first phase – league and one pre-quarter-final – of a truncated Ranji Trophy, with the knockouts scheduled for June, after the IPL.

O’Neil can put the blame on £15m Wolves star if he gets the sack

Wolverhampton Wanderers remain 19th in the Premier League after they were beaten 2-1 by West Ham United at the London Stadium on Monday night.

The Old Gold have only won two of their 15 league matches so far and Gary O’Neil’s job may now be in danger, after The Telegraph reported that he was hanging by a thread ahead of the match.

Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen scored the goals for the home team either side of Matt Doherty’s equaliser, to secure all three points for Julen Lopetegui’s men.

There were some contentious officiating decisions, as always seems to be the case for Wolves, that went against O’Neil’s side in London on Monday.

The VAR decisions that went against Wolves

There were two penalty decisions that went against the Old Gold in the match, with the first coming when Emerson’s challenge, which was not given as a foul on the field, on Goncalo Guedes was adjusted to have been outside of the box, despite it carrying on into the box.

Konstantinos Mavropanos later appeared to foul Jean-Ricner Bellegarde inside the box by standing on the attacker’s foot, although the way that the Wolves man ended up on the floor may not have helped his case.

As you can see in the clip above, there was also a good case to suggest that VAR should have intervened to ask the referee to take a second look at Mavropanos’ challenge on Santiago Bueno in the build-up to the winning goal from Bowen.

However, Wolves’ players also have to take some responsibility for their performances on the pitch. One player who may have let O’Neil, if he is to be sacked, down for the last time is central midfielder Joao Gomes.

Joao Gomes' performance in numbers against West Ham

The 23-year-old endured a frustrating evening at the London Stadium as he failed to make an impact on the game in or out of possession.

Gomes was withdrawn from the match in the 78th minute after he had seemingly grown more and more frustrated with the match and the officiating, committing six fouls and being shown a yellow card that has ultimately led to a suspension ahead of the weekend after five cautions this term.

The £15m Brazilian could not have had many complaints if he was shown a second yellow for his persistent fouling, along with his gestures of displeasure towards the referee after his sixth foul – shortly before O’Neil subbed him off.

As you can see in the table above, Gomes struggled badly off the ball as he lost 11 of his 13 duels on the floor and in the air combined, which shows that the West Ham players found it easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

The midfielder also failed to influence the play at the top end of the pitch, with one ‘big chance’ missed and zero created for his teammates, which shows that he let the team down with his performance on and off the ball.

Therefore, Gomes was even worse than VAR for Wolves because his display – as shown by the statistics above – was objectively disappointing, whilst the VAR decisions were contentious, rather than stonewall errors.

James Bracey rediscovers his focus but Yorkshire eye path to victory

Gloucestershire fight their way into lead but remain some distance from safety

“I’m not a bad batsman, even though I averaged two. I’m not a bad keeper, even though I dropped a few balls.” Such was James Bracey’s reflection last December on one of the most traumatic starts to an England career of modern times.Called into England’s squad as top-order cover for the series against New Zealand last June, he found himself keeping wicket and batting at No. 7 after Ben Foakes slipped in the dressing room at the Kia Oval and tore a hamstring. The malaise remained when he retreated back to county cricket, but his form had steadied by the end of the season. All that now appears to be behind him. His orderly hundred against Yorkshire was his third first-class century in succession, following one for the Lions against Australia A in Brisbane shortly before Christmas (about the only good thing that happened to England on the entire Ashes misadventure) and 117 against Northants in the season’s opener at Wantage Road. Disciplined and correct, it was easy to see why England convinced themselves that he could offer the top-order stability they need. He still might: they are no nearer to finding it since.Bracey has responded to his England adversity by seeking a balanced outlook – trying to control his intensity, concentrating on scoring heavily for Gloucestershire and allowing life to take its course. “England is still an ambition, but I’ve learned not to over-focus on it and let it dominate my thoughts – it’s a new perspective I’ve got,” he said. He said it seriously so might still be persuading himself.Related

Overton presses England claim with five-wicket haul in resounding Surrey win

His hundred has held up Yorkshire’s victory push, although it would take a much greater reversal of fortunes yet to turn the game in Gloucestershire’s favour. Trailing by 149 on first innings, they closed the third day on 253 for 6, a lead of 104, and would need to turn that into 240-plus, or a touch-and-go run chase, on a pitch that has flattened out under constant sunshine.Yorkshire, incidentally, can rest easy at suggestions that their new coach, Ottis Gibson, could be shortlisted for England’s white-ball role. Gibson, who said upon joining Yorkshire that he had tired of the international treadmill, has privately indicated that his ambitions remain at Yorkshire, where he has only been a matter of weeks. The relief in that in the Broad Acres will be substantial because he has a huge role to play in the county’s regeneration.Bracey’s shakiest moment came on 70 when he hooked at Haris Rauf and took a nasty blow on the helmet. He batted on, but he must have feared concussion when he heard the strains of “Wonderwall”, sung in his honour by a stag party dressed in cricket whites and conducted by a groom-to-be dressed as an Easter chick. Well, when you lose your England place, you must take your accolades wherever you can.”I was trying to work out for a session who they were and then I realised they were people I knew, from the Frocester club,” he said. “My brother used to play there. It was good to have a bit of support with my head ringing. It was a bit of a bang but I passed my concussion test so I was happy to bat on. I think I’ve learned to be careful pulling 90mph fast bowlers.”Gloucestershire have a glorious history when it comes to chickens. In their limited-overs heyday at the turn of the century, the ritual of the chicken dance took hold, in which Gloucestershire supporters celebrated every success by waving a salmonella-ridden chicken heavenwards while burring: “We’ve got the whole chicken in our hands.” This demonic tradition had a remarkable effect and stretched back to a match at Lord’s in 1997 when, the story had it, a supporter unpacked what he imagined was his pack-up only to discover he had taken a whole chicken out of the fridge by mistake. Clearly, dressing up as a chicken in Gloucestershire could be a perilous business. It is to be hoped that George, the prospective groom, has built a spot of exorcism into the service.Following his blow, Bracey was treated to a bouncer next ball from Rauf, which he ducked (but did not chicken), and he thick-edged a boundary later in the over, but he soon recovered his poise. He was particularly assertive against Matthew Fisher (who appears to be transmuting into Matty Fisher now England have come calling), but for the most part his innings was impressive more for its intelligent accumulation than any moments of flamboyance. With half the side out of 138, still 11 behind, Yorkshire must have fancied a three-day victory. Fisher made short shrift of Ben Charlesworth, bowled through the gate; the old fox, Steve Patterson, shaped one away from Marcus Harris from around the wicket for Harry Brook to hold the catch at first slip; and Rauf bowled Graeme van Buuren around his legs. The best ball of the lot came from Jordan Thompson, who bowled Tom Lace with one that left him off the pitch. But Bracey wore them down. He was 101 by the time he offered a chance, a tough one to his right off Dom Bess which Adam Lyth could not hold at slip. Yorkshire looked a little footsore in the final hour of a warm day, enough for Patterson to take the new ball late on, but that ball will have plenty of hardness left on the fourth morning and they will be anxious to push home their advantage.

As well as Diaz: Slot must drop Liverpool man who lost 75% duels

Liverpool battled several adversities to avoid a defeat in a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Marco Silva’s Fulham at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

The away side took the lead Andreas Pereira in the 11th minute before Andy Robertson was sent off for taking down Harry Wilson as the last man in the 17th. Arne Slot’s side reacted well to those setbacks, though, and equalised through Cody Gakpo just after the break.

Fulham battled their way back in front through Rodrigo Muniz, only for Slot’s super substitute Diogo Jota to come off the bench to score a late equaliser.

Whilst it was a decent point, given the circumstances after Robertson’s red card, there were some underwhelming performers for the Reds, including Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz's performance against Fulham

The Colombia international was selected to lead the line for Liverpool, ahead of Darwin Nunez and Jota, and failed to offer enough to the team at the top end of the pitch.

He did compete well on the physical side of the match, winning two of his four ground duels and both of his aerial contests, and this meant that the forward was not bullied by the Fulham defenders.

However, Diaz only completed 79% of his attempted passes and made one key pass, without creating a ‘big chance’ for his teammates, and this shows that he struggled to provide much in the way of creativity.

Liverpool star Luis Diaz

The 27-year-old attacker was also wasteful in front of goal. He missed one ‘big chance’ and failed to convert his 0.64 xG (over two shots) to find the back of the net.

Slot must drop him for the substitute goalscorer Jota on Wednesday night in the League Cup against Southampton, and another player who should instantly be binned from the starting XI is central midfielder Curtis Jones.

Curtis Jones' performance against Fulham

The Liverpool academy graduate got the nod alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Dominic Szoboszlai in the middle of the park, and struggled in and out of possession.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates

Jones was not strong enough to compete against the Fulham players as he lost 75% (3/4) of his duels throughout his time on the pitch, which shows that it was too easy for opposition players to get the better of him.

It was not only his play out of possession that left a lot to be desired, though, as the England international also failed to create a single chance for his teammates.

As you can see in the table above, his partners in midfield both significantly outperformed him from a defensive perspective, whilst Szoboszlai was the main creative threat in there for Slot.

With this performance, and with it being a midweek cup game, in mind, the Dutch head coach must consider instantly dropping the Liverpool lightweight down to the bench for the clash with the Saints on Wednesday, due to his struggles on and off the ball.

But with his wife due to give birth in June, Zampa is expected to miss the mid-year tour of Sri Lanka, which features three T20s, five ODIs, and two Tests. The T20 World Cup starts on October 16, and Zampa is confident he will have enough cricket under his belt despite the long mid-year break.Related

“It’s pretty rare for a cricketer these days to get three months off, so I’m really going to make the most of it,” Zampa said ahead of Tuesday’s ODI series opener against Pakistan in Lahore.”Potentially the next game of cricket that I’ll have is the 100-ball competition [starting in August], and then we’ve got a lot of cricket after that. But the 29-year-old says it felt vastly different earlier in his career.”I feel like I don’t have to look over my shoulder too much with selection,” Zampa said. “When you’re younger, you naturally probably look over your shoulder, you doubt yourself a lot more.”Aaron Finch has helped me massively with my game. He backs me in when I’m out there, and he lets me run my own show with my bowling, and has been really good with his own ideas as well.”I’ve been in this team for six years now. You never want to use the word comfortable, but I definitely back myself in a lot more these days.”I can go out there and maybe experiment and put things on the line for the team to try to do my role.”Australia are brimming with confidence after securing a 1-0 Test series win in Pakistan. But with stars such as David Warner, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Steven Smith all missing from the white-ball component of the tour, Australia face a challenge to come away with victory.”It’s going to be a difficult challenge,” Zampa said. “The plus that comes from that, as it always does when these things happen, is you build depth.”
