Leeds set sights on move to sign 25 y/o forward with 18 goals this season

Leeds United are in the hunt for promotion, which may determine the calibre of player they can attract to Elland Road during the summer transfer window.

Leeds United set for monumental clash at Bramall Lane

Championship clashes don’t come bigger than on Monday night for Leeds United. Daniel Farke has his side sitting two points clear at the top of the table, but Sheffield United linger directly below the Whites in the race for automatic promotion.

Fittingly, both sides meet at Bramall Lane tomorrow evening, and a statement victory from the visitors would open up a five-point advantage at the summit heading into the final 12 matches of their league campaign.

Speaking ahead of the top-two meeting, Farke confirmed Leeds winger Manor Solomon is a doubt to face the Blades, stating: “So, it will be a right race. But he is more or less the only question mark.”

Patrick Bamford and Maximilian Wober also miss out as expected, though there is plenty of squad depth within the camp to compensate for absentees. At this point, navigating a way over the finishing line is key for Leeds United before the search for summer reinforcements begins at Elland Road.

Ultimately, the question of promotion will determine the extent of business they are able to conduct. Recently, Leeds were linked with ambitious moves for AC Milan loanee Tammy Abraham and Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor.

Turning their attention to alternative markets, Farke has now set his sights on a fellow countryman who has impressed at the highest level this term.

Leeds United turn attention to Celtic star Nicolas Kuhn

According to The Boot Room, Leeds United are interested in bringing Celtic’s Nicolas Kuhn to Elland Road following his magnificent form for the Bhoys on both domestic and continental stages this campaign.

The 25-year-old has lodged 18 goals and 12 assists this campaign under Brendan Rodgers, including strikes against RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich during the Scottish Premiership champions’ run to the Champions League knockout playoff phase.

Everton, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and Brentford are also in hot pursuit of the former Rapid Vienna winger amid emergence in Glasgow after completing a £3 million move in January 2024.

Dubbed ‘Super Nicolas Kuhn’ by Celtic supporters, the former Germany Under-20 international has averaged around two shots and 1.8 key passes per Scottish Premiership fixture this term, per Sofascore. He has also created eight ‘big chances’ as the Glasgow giants near a fourth successive title triumph.

While the offer of regular silverware and appearing in the Champions League would be difficult for Kuhn to leave behind, there is growing speculation over his future as the lure of Premier League stardom is an enticing one for any player who has established themselves north of the border.

Celtic would likely be in no hurry to sell, given his contract at Parkhead runs until 2029. Simply put, Leeds would have to secure promotion to the top flight to stand any chance of tempting him to Yorkshire.

T20 franchise commitments leave England short-stocked for ODI tour of Bangladesh

Hales, Billings, Dawson, Vince among players to honour PSL contracts over England chances

England will test the depth of their white-ball reserves as they prepare to announce a depleted squad for their of Bangladesh in March this week.A combination of scheduling conflicts, injuries and franchise commitments will likely see limited-overs coach Matthew Mott and captain Jos Buttler lead a mixed squad of established players, fringe talent and new faces. The three ODIs and three T20Is in Bangladesh were originally due to take place in October 2021 prior to that year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, before the ECB and BCB agreed on a postponement. On Monday The Telegraph reported that Alex Hales, who returned to the national team for 2022’s T20 World Cup, has opted to forgo the tour having committed to a more lucrative deal with Pakistan Super League franchise Islamabad United starting from February 26. It has since been understood that Sam Billings, Liam Dawson and James Vince, three players who have been in and around both white-ball teams for several years, are also expected to follow suit. ESPNcricinfo also understands that Richard Gleeson and Tymal Mills are considering their availability for the T20I leg of the tour. The PSL is due to run from February 13 to March 19, and Hales had already indicated to his franchise that he would be taking time off before the competition once the ILT20 had come to an end.The first ODI against Bangladesh is on March 1, meaning those players who are part of the Test tour of New Zealand will not be available, with the second Test due to finish on February 28 in Wellington. That rules out Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Olly Stone (all currently involved in the ODIs in South Africa) and Joe Root. Will Jacks, yet to be capped in the 50-over format but seen as an opening option going forward, is also on the Test tour. He was not picked for the ongoing South Africa ODI series, having been permitted to play a full part in the concurrent SA20, and he will be moving onto the PSL after the New Zealand tour, having been picked up as a replacement player by Quetta Gladiators.Along with the absences of Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone through injury, it is likely some of those on the Lions tour of Sri Lanka will be drafted in. Fast bowler Mark Wood, currently resting after the Test tour of Pakistan, is due to return for Bangladesh. While players choosing franchise cricket over the national team will raise alarm bells, the ECB hierarchy are understood to be settled on the matter, having anticipated that such issues would arise during this period of the winter. Director of men’s cricket Rob Key and performance director Mo Bobat have been keen to work in tandem with T20 leagues, appreciating the benefits that the players obtain from exposure to high-level cricket in overseas conditions. This attitude is exemplified by Jofra Archer, who made a first return to competitive cricket since July 2021 when he turned out for MI Cape Town in the SA20 earlier this year. In turn, he made his first England appearance in 687 days in last week’s first ODI against South Africa. Related

South Africa target series sweep as England brace for six of the worst

England are behind on their World Cup studies – but there's still plenty of time to cram

There has also been a recognition that asking players to forgo franchise opportunities is tricky, particularly for those without central contracts, such as Hales, Billings, Vince and Dawson. The ECB want to avoid the worst-case scenario of forcing a player to choose between clubs and country, and as such are keen to have open dialogue whenever such issues are on the horizon. Such an approach has become all the more necessary given the sheer number of England players taking their short-form trades around the world, with over 60 representatives across the Big Bash League, SA20 and ILT20 in the last month alone.Discussions with those who have opted out of the Bangladesh tour are understood to have been upfront and honest, even empathetic, with the decisions left to the players. More potential selections could yet take a similar option.Ultimately, the situation leaves England at a disadvantage as they aim to fine-tune their preparations ahead of defending their 50-over World Cup in India later this year. Having lost the first two ODIs in South Africa, Wednesday’s final match of the series was the first of 11 remaining matches ahead of the tournament. With three of those now due to take place with a heavily diluted group, the opportunities for England to rediscover their balance in the format has been diminished. The final squad is likely to have a similar look to the one that toured Pakistan for seven-T20 matches last October, which featured five uncapped players. Luke Wright, who officially begins his role as national selector in March, but has his own experience of balancing priorities on the franchise circuit, is understood to have been involved in the discussions.

Sky Sports: Aston Villa to hold talks with 20-goal target who Monchi loves

In a move that would replace Jhon Duran and sharpen their frontline even further, Aston Villa are now reportedly set to hold their first meeting with a summer target who’s enjoying an excellent season.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have endured a mixed campaign so far. Whilst they’ve undoubtedly enjoyed moments to savour in the Champions League, such as their victory over Bayern Munich, they’ve struggled to replicate such performances in the Premier League at times and sit 10th as a result. Now five points adrift of the top four, their European hopes are beginning to fade.

With that in mind, they’ll want to make the most of every game that they do have among Europe’s elite, including their last 16 clash against Club Brugge which many will have them as favourites to win and take one step into the final eight this evening.

Of course, it’s not just on the pitch that Champions League qualification is important. Away from the action, a place on Europe’s biggest stage acts as a vital attraction point for key signings more often than not, but those in the Midlands will be hoping that’s not the case with one particular target.

According to Sky Sports’ Sacha Tavolieri, Aston Villa are now set to hold their first meeting with Samu Aghehowa as they look to introduce Unai Emery to a player that sporting director Monchi loves.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 3, 2025

Already in contact with his agent, the Villans are now set to schedule a one-to-one appointment with the striker, who has enjoyed an incredibly impressive campaign.

Valued at a reported £42m by Porto, the striker could become one of the bargains of the summer if he went on to replicate his Portugal form in the Premier League.

"Powerhouse" Aghehowa could take Aston Villa back to UCL place

Since Duran’s January exit, Aston Villa have been left with just one natural striker in Ollie Watkins – forcing Donyell Malen to lead the line in the Englishman’s recent brief absence through injury. And although Duran’s presence handed Emery quite the selection headache, the Spaniard could certainly do with some competition at the centre of his attack – something Aghehowa would instantly offer.

Al Nassr's JhonDuranreacts

With 20 goals to his name in 32 appearances in all competitions so far this season, it’s fair to say that the former Atletico Madrid man has taken Portugal by storm at just 20 years old. Earning plenty of attention as a result, analyst Ben Mattinson described Aghehowa as a “powerhouse” and praised his “imposing” physicality back in December.

As Aston Villa begin to step up their move to sign the talented forward, there’s no doubt that Aghehowa will be one to watch this summer.

Fakhar 117, Imam fifty take Pakistan 1-0 up against New Zealand

For New Zealand, Mitchell’s 113 went in vain, even as Naseem bowled a tight spell

Danyal Rasool27-Apr-2023

Fakhar Zaman celebrates after scoring a hundred•PCB

Fakhar Zaman’s ninth ODI hundred and a phenomenally frugal bowling performance by Naseem Shah helped Pakistan ease to a five-wicket win over New Zealand in the first ODI in Rawalpindi. In the process, they brought up their 500th ODI win, the third team to do so; the 949 games they took makes them the second quickest to the landmark after Australia, who managed the feat in 811 matches. Set 289 to win, Pakistan were never in serious danger of falling short after a 124-run opening stand between Fakhar and Imam-ul-Haq. Forty-nine from captain Babar Azam and a cameo lower down the order by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan helped them get over the line in the 49th over and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.Daryl Mitchell’s second ODI hundred had helped New Zealand to 288. A century second-wicket stand with Will Young, whose own knock of 86 came off just 78 balls, had helped set the platform for a score in excess of 300, but accurate death bowling from Pakistan – as well as the visitors’ inability to find boundaries – kept them in check. That was largely thanks to Naseem, who was at his metronomic best at both top and tail of the innings, his figures of 2 for 29 in his allotted ten ensuring New Zealand wouldn’t get past the 300-mark they looked on track for, for the best part of the innings. The chase was a realisation of the template Pakistan have followed on their best days in this format over the past four years. The bulk of the run-scoring was done by Fakhar, Imam and Babar; there is a reason, after all, no other side has relied as much as Pakistan on their top three for runs. While New Zealand’s openers had begun sedately, Pakistan started briskly on a surface that posed little danger to the batters.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Adam Milne and Matt Henry were milked and picked off for the occasional boundary, but once the 100 partnership came up in the 19th over, they displayed more obvious truculence. Fakhar pumped Mitchell for a six back over his head while Imam did the same to Ish Sodhi soon after. Both men had brought up half-centuries by now, and Pakistan appeared on track.Sodhi struck the next ball after finding some grip and trapping Imam in front, but only paved the way for another long partnership, this time between Babar and Fakhar. It looked as if those two would take the game right through to the end. The Pakistan captain looked at home since ball one, while Fakhar was moving inexorably towards yet another ODI hundred. When he did get there with a drive through extra cover he punched the air before the customary .But a loose shot from Babar one away from 50 brought Shan Masood to the crease. He was soon on his way back after a bit of a struggle, lapping the 12th ball to extra cover having added just one run, and New Zealand had the tiniest of openings once more. But Rizwan would shut it down with aplomb, looking to take the jeopardy out of the game by counterattacking. This he did with considerable success, and even as Fakhar fell for 117 at the other end, he ensured there was little reason for the home side to get wobbly. A smear over midwicket in the penultimate over sealed the deal, giving Pakistan the win they looked good value for through much of the game.Earlier, Pakistan had opted to put New Zealand in to bat on a hot day and a flat track. The bowlers started off keeping the openers on a leash, particularly Naseem, who found sideways movement and an extra yard of pace, allowing just 12 runs in his six-over spell. It was a bowling change, though, that brought the wicket, with Haris Rauf drawing the outside edge from Chad Bowes in his first over, capping a powerplay that belonged to the bowlers.Daryl Mitchell and Will Young added 102 for the second wicket but it was in vain•AFP/Getty Images

But as the field spread out, New Zealand began to grow into the innings. Young began to find his feet, especially against the spin. After a 51-ball 50, he swept Shadab for four and Agha Salman’s first delivery for a six. Pakistan continued to plug away with spin to little effect, with Mitchell soon beginning to play a useful support act. Young looked to be heading for a breezy hundred as the partnership crossed three figures and New Zealand sat pretty at 150 for one in a shade over 26 overs. But Shadab struck as Young holed out in pursuit of another boundary, and though Mitchell was only getting more comfortable, New Zealand could never quite assert themselves in the same way again. Tom Latham’s struggle at the crease – he managed 20 off 36 before falling lbw to a juicy full toss – sapped momentum. Mitchell smacked a pair of boundaries off Shadab and another four and six off Nawaz, but he was getting little support. The last 25 overs of the innings produced just three boundaries that Mitchell did not hit, and once Mark Chapman was cleaned up by Rauf, the innings never really went anywhere. Mitchell brought up a well-deserved hundred with a majestic straight drive off Shaheen Afridi, but with the miserly Naseem at the other end, New Zealand’s run-scoring was becoming more and more impecunious.Naseem would get the rewards he deserved so richly in the wickets column right at the death, dismissing Rachin Ravindra and Adam Milne off the final two deliveries of the innings, ensuring New Zealand ended well short of 300. As it turned out, they also fell well of a total to challenge Pakistan’s batters on a surface like this.

Spurs are brewing a homegrown Kulusevski in 16-year-old "cheat-code"

Their Premier League position might suggest otherwise, but Tottenham Hotspur are blessed with a number of incredibly talented players.

From the likes of Djed Spence, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero at the back to Dominic Solanke and Son Heung-min in attack, there is talent throughout the Lilywhites’ squad.

That is especially true in the middle of the park, as Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr all possess game-changing qualities.

TottenhamHotspur's James Maddisoncelebrates scoring their second goal with teammates

Yet, perhaps the club’s best player is none other than Dejan Kulusevski, and in an exciting development, it appears as if Hotspur Way could be about to provide Ange Postecoglou with a homegrown version of the Swede.

What makes Kulusevski so great?

So, when it comes down to what makes Kulusevski such an incredible player, there are a couple of core reasons, with the first being his positional versatility.

The former Juventus star was initially signed as a winger back in 2022 and has played off the right more than anywhere else for the North Londoners, but, especially this year, he’s thrived in several other positions, notably midfield.

In all, the Stockholm-born star has played 70 games as a right-winger for the Lilywhites, 40 games in attacking midfield, five in central midfield and up top, two off the left and in right-midfield, and he’s even made one appearance as a second striker.

The second reason the 25-year-old is such an incredible player for Postecoglou and Co is that, on top of being able to fill in all over the pitch, he’s got the ability to produce as well.

For example, in 42 appearances this season, the “world-class” ace, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored ten goals and provided ten assists, making him the second-most productive player in the squad, behind only his captain.

In short, Kulusevski is not just one of Spurs’ best players but one of the league’s best players, so it’s good news that Hotspur Way might be brewing their version of the Swede.

Spurs' homegrown Kulusevski

While the most-talked-about academy product at Spurs this season has been the incredible Mikey Moore, it could be the lesser-known Luca Williams-Barnett next season.

It’s the 16-year-old phenom who could well be the club’s own Kulusevski, and there are a few reasons why.

The first is that like the Swedish international, the promising teenager can play in a handful of positions, from attacking midfield to either wing, up top and even left-midfield, lending credence to academy expert and pundit John Wenham’s description of him as a “cheat-code.”

However, the second and undoubtedly more important similarity to the former Juve star is that he’s already proving to be an incredibly effective attacking outlet for the youth sides.

For example, in just 24 appearances for the U18s, totalling 1887 minutes, the unreal talent, whom analyst Ben Mattinson described as “a name to keep an eye on,” has scored 20 goals and provided ten assists.

That means he’s averaging 1.25 goal involvements every game, or one every 62.9 minutes, which is the sort of form that could see him propelled into the first team next season.

Ultimately, while this season has been a disaster, Spurs have several incredibly talented players in their senior squad, and if Williams-Barnett continues on his brilliant trajectory, then there is every chance he could be playing alongside Kulusevski next year.

The exceptional Spurs ace will be worth a fortune in the future.
