The Shafali-Lanning show flattens RCB before Tara Norris' five-for

RCB stutter in their chase despite having the firepower of Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry and Heather Knight

Sruthi Ravindranath05-Mar-2023

Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma’s opening stand was worth 162•BCCI

It was just over a week ago when a disappointed Shafali Verma was watching Australia captain Meg Lanning celebrate a thrilling win over India in the T20 World Cup semi-finals in Cape Town. On Sunday, the two came together to feast on a listless Royal Challengers Bangalore bowling, fist-bumping their way to a rollicking 162-run stand in 14.3 overs at the Brabourne Stadium.Delhi Capitals amassed 223 for 2, the second 200-plus total in a row in the WPL, and in turn, Royal Challengers could only get to 163 for 8, as USA’s Tara Norris – the only Associate player in the tournament – bagged five wickets. It wasn’t like Royal Challengers did not have the firepower. Having Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry and Heather Knight in your line-up is an absolute dream. On a good batting surface, you expect these big names to show up. But Capitals have Lanning and she is no ordinary captain. Actually, we can say it out loud: she is a five-time World Cup-winning captain. She placed a mid-off and prompted Alice Capsey to bowl wide to Devine, who had been targeting that area for boundaries. That resulted in a superb catch by Shafali at mid-off to dismiss the dangerous Devine for just 14. Lanning brought on left-arm spinner Radha Yadav only after Mandhana was dismissed. And she never gave Royal Challengers a chance to recover after that. The Shafali-Lanning serve: elegance, power and everything in between”, video analyst (Every team has a video analyst so everyone knows others’ strength and weakness, we have planned everything and we will execute it).”That was Shafali’s response to the host broadcaster before the match on being asked what advise she gave Lanning to stop Mandhana from scoring runs. On the day, Shafali made sure Royal Challengers did not execute any of their strategies they possibly had for her, as she brought her . It was evident in the way she effortlessly charged down the pitch to gracefully drive the ball over long-on or how she backed away to heave a short and wide ball from Devine powerfully over mid-off.While acknowledging that she found her fluency on the day, Shafali also said she was upset that she fell before reaching her century.”I knew it was my day today,” she said after the match. “I was telling myself that I need to bat throughout. When I got out in my 80s, I got really sad because it was that kind of a day, and I couldn’t get my century. It was my time to have hit a century. My family’s presence at the stadium also gave me confidence. And I was only thinking that I should convert and that I shouldn’t play any loose shot.”At the other end was world-class Lanning, showing off her elegance with every shot. She played her favourite cut every time the ball fell short and wide. She also targeted the area behind square with her pulls and sweeps. The duo hardly spared any bowler, leaving Royal Challengers clueless. They put up the fifth-highest stand in women’s T20 leagues, and they did that by constantly encouraging each other in the middle.”She [Lanning] was constantly appreciating me and I was more and more encouraged by it,” Shafali said. “We were just backing each other. She knows how I play and I know how she plays. I was also trying to back her, [I wanted her to be] confident and comfortable playing with me. When I hit a four she said, ‘good shot, keep playing’ and I also (did) that, kept telling her ‘good shot, keep going like this’ and I really enjoyed playing with her.”Ahead of the tournament, Lanning had said she couldn’t wait to stand at the other end and watch Shafali “whack other teams around the park”. Not only did her wish come true in Capitals’ first match, but she also got to join the party. On a sweltering Sunday afternoon, the duo made Mandhana regret her decision to bowl first. While we’ll leave you to decide what the pair’s nickname should be, all we can say is we ship this budding womance.Tara Norris bagged a five-for on WPL debut•BCCI

Kapp’s blitz and Tara Norris, the Associate trump cardThe duo also laid the perfect platform for Marizanne Kapp to the off from. Along with Jemimah Rodrigues, Kapp made sure the run rate did not drop as she took on Perry, Megan Schutt and Knight for fours and sixes to get the team total to 200 in the 19th over. She scored a boundary off the last ball of the innings to finish with a 17-ball 39.Capitals had a standout performer in the bowling department too. Norris, the USA left-arm quick, who has been building her experience by plying her trade in the England domestic circuit, came to the party later in the evening. When Perry was just finding her touch in the tall chase, Norris all but ended Royal Challengers’ hopes by getting her to drag on in the 11th over. In the same over, she sent No. 4 Disha Kasat back with a short ball. Norris struck twice in her next over too, dismissing Richa Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja. By the end of that 13th over, Royal Challengers’ equation had reached an improbable 128 off 42 balls with just four wickets in hand. And in her final over, with Royal Challengers floundering, Norris also had Knight caught at cover to cap a memorable spell of 5 for 29.

Van der Gugten five-for puts Glamorgan on top on rain-shortened day

Marcus Harris fifty provides main substance of limp Gloucestershire effort

ECB Reporters Network06-Apr-2023

Glamorgan took control on the opening day of their LV=Insurance County Championship match against Gloucestershire in Cardiff with their bowlers holding sway on a shortened day.Having won the toss, Glamorgan put Gloucestershire into bat and bowled them out for 165. Marcus Harris was the standout performer for the visitors, making 59 from 129 balls. It was left to the late-order pair of Zafar Gohar and Tom Price to lead a rescue of sorts, with the pair putting on a vital stand of 46 to take Gloucestershire past 150.The Glamorgan attack was well led by Timm van der Gugten who took 5 for 26 to put his side in control of this match.Glamorgan were left with just one over to face before the close with van der Gugten promoted to open. He successfully carried out his nightwatcher duties as Glamorgan closed the day at 4 for 0.Play got underway on time but just four balls had been bowled before a heavy burst of rain brought play to a halt. That relatively brief shower led to an early lunch being taken after the hover cover broke down in the middle of the outfield. After a long delay the offending cover was removed but when they did get back underway after an early lunch there were a further 14 balls before a rain shower took the players off the field once again. With the hover cover out of action the ground staff were left with sheets to cover the pitch, which only further hampered clean up efforts. When play did finally get going it was a watchful start from Gloucestershire, who were happy to see off the excellent new-ball spells of Harry Podmore and van der Gugten. Chris Dent made just 3 runs from 30 balls before he edged one to Chris Cooke off the bowling of Podmore. It wasn’t until the 19th over that the first boundary arrived. When the first four was struck two more followed closely afterward as James Bracey started to put some pressure back on the Glamorgan bowlers with three boundaries from one James Harris over.A stand of 66 between Bracey and Marcus Harris was broken in the last over before the tea interval when Bracey poked at a ball outside his off stump from David Lloyd and feathered an edge through to Cooke. The reintroduction of van der Gugten after the tea break brought four more wickets, all lbw – Miles Hammond, Graeme van Buuren, Ollie Price and Jack Taylor the batters to go. All four were fine deliveries, but Price will rue his decision to leave a ball alone that seamed back into him and struck him on the pads. There would have been considerable pressure on van der Gugten to lead the attack in the absence of Michael Hogan, who left Glamorgan over the winter to join Kent. On the evidence here, he has taken a big step towards embracing that role this season. As the wickets fell regularly it was Gloucestershire’s Australian import, Harris, who held things together. Harris only arrived in the UK this week having competed in the Sheffield Shield final at the end of last month. It was a patient innings against a ball that was swinging and seaming, his first boundary coming from the 92nd ball he faced. He had reached 59 when he was the seventh wicket to fall, a full delivery from Harris swinging in and bowling him.Gohar and Tom Price’s partnership of 46 was the second-highest stand of the Gloucestershire innings, but at this stage it feels as if they are a long way short of a total that will keep them in this match.

Clinical Multan Sultans secure cushion of a top-two finish

They trounced Gladiators by 79 runs but both teams still have a shot at winning the PSL title

Associated Press13-Mar-2024

Mohammad Rizwan’s Multan Sultans were on fire early in their defence of 185•Pakistan Super League

Legspinner Usama Mir and fast bowler David Willey shared six wickets and routed Quetta Gladiators for 106 as table-toppers Multan Sultans completed their regular season with a 79-run win in the Pakistan Super League on Tuesday.Sultans led the points table with seven wins and will take on No. 2 Peshawar Zalmi (12 points) in the Qualifier on Thursday with the winner advancing to the final. It was a wake-up call for the revamped Gladiators, who will be playing their first PSL playoffs after four years. They will meet Islamabad United in the Eliminator on Thursday.Half-centuries by captain Mohammad Rizwan (69) and Johnson Charles (53) of West Indies propelled Sultans to 185 for 4 after they were put in to bat.Gladiators’ chase got derailed in the third over when Jason Roy’s run of poor form continued as Willey (3-22) had him trapped leg before wicket and Saud Shakeel (14) got run-out.Willey then knocked back captain Rilee Rossouw’s leg stump with an impeccable yorker inside the powerplay and Laurie Evans spooned a dolly to midwicket.Mir (3-22), the leading wicket-taker of the tournament, then removed the Gladiators’ top-scorer Omair Yousuf (37) before he quickly ran through the tailenders to give Sultans and emphatic victory with more than four overs to spare.Earlier, Rizwan smashed his fourth half-century this season and Charles upped the ante in the death overs with his 29-ball knock before Iftikhar Ahmed provided an ideal finish with a quickfire 20 off eight balls.

Taylor, Ramharack, Henry headline West Indies' thrilling win

With three needed off one, Ramharack kept her cool as West Indies took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series

Stafanie Taylor’s 73 on the back of tidy three-wicket hauls from Chinelle Henry and Karishma Ramharack helped West Indies beat Pakistan by two wickets in the second ODI, but not before a late twist. The game all but seemed to be heading in West Indies’ direction when they were placed at 180 for 3 after 41 overs, chasing 224. However, captain Nida Dar’s four-wicket burst brought Pakistan back to life. West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals to slip to 219 for 7 in the final over needing five off six. Fatima Sana then conceded just two off the first five balls which included the wicket of Afy Fletcher. But with three needed off the final ball, Ramharack got an edge to squirt just past the wicketkeeper’s left for a four and spark delirious scenes in the West Indies camp. With the win, West Indies also claimed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.Opting to bat, Sidra Ameen and Bismah Maroof struck fifties, but didn’t get much support from the rest of the batting unit as Pakistan were bowled out for 223 in 48.5 overs. This despite West Indies conceding 30 extras (21 wides and nine leg byes) in their innings. With three needed off one, Karishma Ramharack scored a four to take West Indies to a thrilling win•PCB

Henry struck with her third ball taking out Muneeba Ali for 1. Ameen and Maroof then added 80 for the second wicket to take Pakistan forward. Ameen fell for 50 lbw to Fletcher, and once she was dismissed, the hosts failed to stitch any partnership of note. Maroof held one end up as she recorded her 20th ODI fifty off 91 balls. She was the seventh Pakistan wicket to fall with the score on 196 in the 42nd second over. For West Indies, while Ramharack and Fletcher cut a swathe through the middle order, Henry cleaned up the tail. That Pakistan reached 223 was down to wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi’s 28-ball 25.In the chase, while West Indies lost opener Rashada Williams relatively early, Hayley Mathews kept the innings going with 44. Once she fell, it was Shemaine Campbelle and Taylor, who kept the innings chugging along. The duo added 88 off 106 balls for the third wicket going toe-to-toe in a bid to reach their fifty. Campbelle got their first, reaching the landmark in 70 balls, while Taylor reached their three balls later off 61 balls.Taylor kept the innings going even as Campbelle fell but Dar brought about a flurry of wickets to silence the visitors. Sadia Iqbal took out Taylor in the 47th over while Dar picked two wickets in the 49th to tilt the scales marginally in Pakistan’s favour. But Ramharack kept her cool when it mattered the most.

Liverpool now ready to sell player Slot's "delighted" with after £50m+ bid

Liverpool are now thought to be willing to sell a first-team member who has “delighted” Arne Slot in 2025 despite the manager’s admiration for the player.

Liverpool eyeing new signings to replace Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah

The Reds look set for a hectic transfer window this summer, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah all yet to pen contract extensions.

It looks likely that Alexander-Arnold will depart for Real Madrid, and there are question marks over Van Dijk and Salah respective futures. As a result, Liverpool have been on the search for potential replacements for the star trio.

Slot has already held talks over a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong, whereas Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund may replace Van Dijk and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo is identified as a replacement for Salah.

However, there could be more Anfield exits on the cards ahead of the 2025/26 season, with Liverpool open to selling one player in particular.

Liverpool ready to sell Harvey Elliott after £50m+ Newcastle offer

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool look ready to sell Harvey Elliott this summer, amid interest from Newcastle United.

It is believed that the Reds are ‘willing to cash in in order to bolster what is already a significant transfer kitty’, whereas Elliott himself ‘may have to accept he will need to find a new club if determined to be a regular starter’.

Liverpool player Harvey Elliott

This comes after claims of a £50m+ offer being submitted by Newcastle for Elliott, and TEAMtalk suggest the Magpies and Eddie Howe are indeed keen. Slot admitted at the beginning of the year that he was “delighted” with the midfielder’s display from the bench back in January against Brentford.

“I was delighted by his performance when he came on. It’s so nice for me, for us as a team, that I have players that can impact the game on the bench as well.”

Slot praised Elliott again just last month, days after his winner at PSG by helping Liverpool defeat Southampton at Anfield.

“He came in 15 minutes before the end again and showed how important he is for this team and the others as well. He trains really, he does this and – I said it many times about Wata and I can say the same about Harvey – he hardly gets any playing time but he keeps on going and then when your moment comes, you can finally show your quality.

“And that is the biggest compliment I can give him, but also the biggest compliment is what he brings to the team is that he just keeps on going because I have experienced more than enough players who are in the same position as him or Wata and they start to do less and less and when you do play them you (journalists) probably don’t ask me why I don’t play them.”

However, despite Slot’s high thoughts on Elliott, it looks as if he could be on the way out of Anfield relatively soon going off the recent transfer update.

Pep loves him: Man City willing to pay £50m for "sensational" De Bruyne heir

Manchester City are now willing to pay £50m for a “sensational” midfielder, who could be brought in as a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne this summer, according to a report.

De Bruyne set to leave this summer

De Bruyne has now confirmed he is set to leave Man City at the end of the season, ending his 10-year stay at the Etihad Stadium, and it has been a period of unparalleled success, with the Belgian playing a major role in winning every major trophy available.

As such, the 33-year-old’s legacy will remain intact regardless of how City finish the campaign, but he will no doubt be hoping to go out on a high by securing qualification for the Champions League and winning the FA Cup.

The attacking midfielder will surely go down as one of the all-time Premier League greats, which means it will be extremely difficult for Pep Guardiola to find a suitable replacement this summer, with the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White and Florian Wirtz mentioned as possible options by David Ornstein.

De Bruyne 2.0: Man City chasing £50m star who's "similar to Bellingham"

Man City will need to find a replacement for their outgoing legend

ByJoe Nuttall Apr 8, 2025

According to a report from Spain however, Guardiola is a big fan of Barcelona’s Dani Olmo, with Man City identifying the midfielder as the perfect replacement for De Bruyne, given his impressive performances in La Liga.

Such is their level of interest, the Sky Blues are willing to fork out £50m for Olmo, with Guardiola personally of the belief he would be a perfect fit for the tactical system he has put in place, while the Spaniard’s versatility is also appreciated.

FC Barcelona's DaniOlmocelebrates

The 26-year-old is able to play as both a midfielder and a winger, and he is viewed as a key target for City, who are hoping Guardiola’s relationship with the Barcelona star can help them secure a deal.

"Sensational" Olmo could be suitable De Bruyne heir

In truth, it is going to be very difficult for Guardiola to find an attacking midfielder capable of replicating De Bruyne’s attacking numbers over such a sustained period of time, but there are signs the Spain international could be a suitable replacement.

The former RB Leipzig man has been a key player for Barca when fully-fit this season, picking up seven goals and two assists in La Liga, which has resulted in high praise from the media, with journalist Muhammad Butt lauding him as “sensational”.

Not only that, but the maestro was extremely impressive for Spain en-route to their Euro 2024 victory, picking up three goals and two assists in six matches.

Olmo’s performances for club and country indicate the proposed £50m price tag is fully justified, so it is exciting news that Man City are willing to launch a move this summer, but it will certainly be a tall order to surpass De Bruyne’s achievements at the Etihad Stadium.

Rangers have hit gold on Ibrox "animal" who's worth even more than Reyna

If Glasgow Rangers are to be successful next season, they must get their transfer business spot on during the summer transfer window.

While a range of coaches have tried and failed to take the Light Blues back to the summit of Scottish football, the truth is that operations in the transfer market have largely failed.

Big sums of money were spent on the likes of Sam Lammers, Danilo and Oscar Cortes. Lammers scored twice before leaving after six months, while the latter two have been hampered by a host of injury problems, limiting their impact at the club.

Rangers striker Sam Lammers.

A new manager will hopefully be appointed before the transfer window opens, giving him plenty of time to build a squad capable of ending Celtic’s domestic hegemony next season.

There are a few prized assets that the Gers could cash in on. Hamza Igamane is the most notable example, especially as clubs such as Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are taking a keen interest in the striker.

One big sale could generate enough funds for the Ibrox side to strengthen adequately ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

A couple of players have already been linked with a move to Ibrox in recent weeks…

Latest on Rangers' move for Gio Reyna

According to MLS Transfers (via the Daily Record), Borussia Dortmund starlet Gio Reyna has emerged as a surprise target for the Ibrox side this summer.

The American midfielder has been with Dortmund since starting his professional career, making his debut for the club during the 2019/20 season.

Barcelona'sDaniOlmoin action with Borussia Dortmund's Giovanni Reyna and Nico Schlotterbeck

Since then, he has racked up over 100 competitive appearances, scoring 19 goals and registering 18 assists.

Injuries and a lack of form have restricted his impact over the last two seasons, and the report states that while there is interest from the Bundesliga, Reyna would prefer to leave Germany in search of a new challenge.

If he did move to Rangers, the 22-year-old would follow in the footsteps of his father, Claudio, who played for the club between 1999 and 2001.

The midfielder scored against Parma in the famous 2-0 UEFA Cup victory, enjoying plenty of success in Glasgow before departing in a £4m deal to join Sunderland.

The current Dortmund player might not have fulfilled his potential in recent years, but when fit and firing, he could prove to be an excellent addition to a new-look Rangers side next season.

How much Giovanni Reyna is worth

In December 2021, after a solid start to life in the Bundesliga, Reyna was valued at an impressive €40m (£34m), and it looked as though this value would only continue to increase over time.

However, the youngster has seen this value decrease due to a loss of form and several injuries, meaning he is now worth only €10m (£8.5m) in the current market.

Should he rediscover his form, Reyna could see his valuation soar again, but if Rangers are serious about the midfielder, they must strike now, especially as he only has one year left on his current deal.

Following a wonderful few months, one current Ibrox star appears to be valued at more than double that of Reyna.

Nico Raskin could turn out to be one of the best signings the club has made in years, no doubt about that.

Nico Raskin’s transfer valuation at Rangers

Raskin’s influence had been hampered since joining in 2023 due to several coaching changes plus a few niggling injury issues.

Once he came back into the team last September, however, there has been no stopping the Belgian international. This has led to plenty of transfer interest being shown in him recently.

Last month, TEAMtalk reported that English sides Aston Villa and Leeds United were showing plenty of interest in the player due to his solid displays of late. In the last international break, he even made his full debut for Belgium as they defeated Ukraine in the Nations League playoffs.

Nicolas Raskin

The report states that the Light Blues value Raskin at around the £20m mark, which will hopefully put these respective sides off making a move for him.

This £20m price tag would certainly bolster the club’s financial situation. But is it worth it to lose arguably their best player this season and potential future captain?

Raskin was first given the armband for the 3-0 victory over Celtic at Ibrox way back in January and looked the part.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

While James Tavernier took back control of the captaincy ahead of the Old Firm clash last month, Raskin looked like he could be an excellent candidate for the role in the future.

Not only did he open the scoring at Parkhead, but the 24-year-old also won seven of his 12 ground duels contested, succeeded with 100% of his dribbles and made four tackles during the match.

His performance was widely hailed, including from journalist Scott Bradley, who said: “Nico Raskin has been a different animal since Barry Ferguson came in. He’s truly tapped into his potential. Big future ahead for the lad.”

In the Premiership this season, Raskin has exuded both attacking and defensive skills to great effect. Not only has he created six big chances while averaging one key pass per game, but the Belgian has also won 58% of his total duels contested and makes 2.8 tackles per game in the top flight.

The best thing? He will only continue to get better, and next season could be massive for the youngster.

While Reyna would be a signing that could signal a statement of intent, the Gers already have a midfielder who is worth millions and could go on to bigger and brighter things in the near future.

It is inevitable that he will leave Glasgow. That much is certain. The big question for the new manager is, when exactly will that be?
