It's not Kudus: Frank already has his own Saka in "phenomenal" Spurs star

Tottenham Hotspur have been lucky enough to have numerous top-level attacking talents on their hands over the last couple of years – often handing the supporters moments to cherish forever.

Heung-min Son is just one player who falls into such a category, with the South Korean forward a talent who often managed to produce the goods within the final third.

The winger scored a total of 173 goals for the Lilywhites, a tally which puts him fourth in the club’s record books, with an impressive chunk coming against local rivals, Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur'sSonHeung-minreacts

He scored nine times in his 22 appearances against the Gunners, the third most of any side he’s faced in his career – further highlighting his impact in the North London Derby.

However, despite his impact for Spurs, he was unable to better one player who has often proved to be a thorn in the side of the club in the meetings against them.

Bukayo Saka’s form against Spurs

After his breakthrough in 2020, Arsenal star Bukayo Saka has featured against Spurs on ten separate occasions, subsequently being on the winning side in 60% of the outings.

The Englishman has scored five times against the Lilywhites, averaging a goal every other game and often popping up and finding the net in key moments of derby encounters.

He may not have scored in any of the clashes last season, but he did register the assist for Gabriel’s second-half winner, with Mikel Arteta’s side once again claiming bragging rights.

Saka has now registered 25 or more combined goals and assists in each of his last three seasons, further highlighting the top-level talent he possesses, all despite being just 24 years of age.

Given the levels he’s produced, there’s no denying the Lilywhites faithful must wish they had a player of his calibre, but it’s safe to say stars such as the winger would now cost a pretty penny.

However, boss Thomas Frank shouldn’t worry, with the Dane already having his very own version of the Englishman within his ranks at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Spurs star who’s Frank’s own Saka

Spurs’ 2024/25 campaign was a topsy-turvy one to say the least, with huge highs being achieved all whilst failing to deliver in other competitions under Ange Postecoglou.

TottenhamHotspur managerAngePostecoglu applauds fans after the match

The Aussie ended their 17-year wait for a trophy with their Europa League triumph, but ultimately, it glossed over the cracks that appeared in the Premier League.

He could only achieve a 17th-placed finish in England’s top-flight, subsequently suffering 22 defeats in the process – something which would cost him his job in North London.

Frank was appointed as the manager to pick up the pieces, a task he’s seamlessly taken to immediately, as seen by his tally of just one loss in his opening nine competitive outings.

While he’s added the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons to his ranks this summer, he already had his answer to Saka within his ranks in North London.

Dejan Kulusevski is a player who’s yet to feature under the Dane due to injury, but there’s no denying that the attacker will have a huge role to play upon his return in the months ahead.

The Swede, who has been dubbed “phenomenal” by one creator, is currently sidelined with a knee injury, but did manage to star on a consistent basis in 2024/25 before he went under the knife to fix the recurring issue.

He registered 10 goals and 11 assists across all competitions last campaign, ending the year as one of the Lilywhites’ most creative outlets within attacking areas.

Such is the level of his performances last year, he was dubbed as a similar player to Saka by FBref, further highlighting how impressive he was under Postecoglou.

When comparing their respective figures, Kulusevski managed to outperform the Arsenal star in various key areas, showcasing the huge amount of quality he possesses.

The table highlights the depth of areas he managed to outclass Saka, with his return to fitness undoubtedly a huge boost to Frank and the Spurs fanbase.

It’s unclear what level of fitness he will possess after such a long injury layoff, but when he gets fully firing, the Swede will add another dimension to the club’s potent frontline.

If he can replicate or better his numbers from last year, there’s no reason as to why the forward can’t help Frank make his first season in North London one to remember.

Dyche plotting shock January Nottingham Forest raid for "magic" £20m forward

Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche is now plotting a shock January transfer raid to sign a “magic” £20m forward, who could be the new manager’s first signing.

Forest keen to strengthen attacking options amid Kalimuendo uncertainty

Despite spending just a few months at the City Ground, it has recently emerged that Arnaud Kalimuendo’s future is already up in the air, with Forest now in talks over a deal to sell the striker to AS Roma, having made just a handful of substitute appearances.

It could be difficult for Kalimuendo to force his way into contention, given that Dyche knows he can trust Chris Wood from their time working together at Burnley, with the new manager taking the time to praise his former player for a top performance last season.

After Everton’s 2-0 defeat against the Tricky Trees, the former Toffees boss said: “I thought he was excellent today, doing all the hard yards. Not touching the ball very often, but doing everything he needs to to be a handful. He was the difference in my opinion today.”

As such, the 54-year-old is likely to be excited by the prospect of working with Wood once again, and he is also looking to seal a reunion with another former player.

That is according to a report from Sports Boom, which reveals Dyche is now plotting a shock January transfer raid to sign Everton winger Dwight McNeil, with the manager determined to reunite the 25-year-old with Wood.

The duo formed a successful partnership at Burnley, which the new Nottingham Forest manager is aiming to replicate, although McNeil has since gone on to struggle at Everton, having failed to force his way into David Moyes’ plans so far this season.

Having arrived on Merseyside for a fee of £20m back in 2022, the 25-year-old still has two years remaining on his deal, but a move to the City Ground could be tempting, given that he arguably played his best football under Dyche…

"Magic" McNeil could kickstart his career at Forest

The forward has impressed at times since moving to Everton, chipping in with 12 goal contributions in 21 Premier League matches last season, while also once being lauded as “magic” by reporter Joe Thomas.

owever, game time became much more limited after Moyes’ arrival, and it is clear that Dyche has a lot of trust in the former Burnley man, who missed just two Premier League games for the Clarets across three seasons from 2019-20 to 2021-22.

McNeil hasn’t always been the most prolific of attackers, but having sacked two managers already this season, Evangelos Marinakis needs to back Dyche, who is evidently a huge admirer of the winger.

Rays Reliever Hilariously Pointed Up on Cal Raleigh's 417-Foot Go-Ahead Home Run

Major League Baseball's home-run leader, Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, smacked his 43rd homer of the season Friday night in a huge spot.

He stepped up to the plate as the Mariners trailed the Rays 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs and two runners on base. Ahead in the count 2-0, he received an 87-mph sweeper low in the zone from newly acquired Rays relief pitcher Griffin Jax. Raleigh sent the pitch 417 feet and over the fence at T-Mobile Park to give the Mariners the late lead.

After the ball hit Raleigh's bat, Jax raised his arm in the air to direct his defense which became a hilarious moment since it flew far over the center-field fence.

In Jax's defense, it wasn't exactly a no-doubt home run and he didn't appear to put his pointer finger in the air, likely because he quickly realized Raleigh just hit a game-changing homer off him. Still, a funny moment nonetheless. After the three-run shot ended up in a 3-2 loss for the Rays, Jax acknowledged he put himself in a bad spot, getting behind on one of baseball's best hitters.

"There’s a reason he’s having a really good year," Jax said of Raleigh postgame via MLB.com's Daniel Kramer. "He’s a really good hitter. I’ve had a couple at-bats against him this year that have gone my way, so he’s seen me now three or four times. When I put myself in a hole 2-0, good hitters do that."

Raleigh's 43rd homer on the year widened his lead on Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber who has hit 41. In the American League, the next closest players to the "Big Dumper" are his new teammate Eugenio Suárez and Yankees star Aaron Judge, who have 37 homers apiece this season.

Digging Into the Origin Story of the 'Magic Number' for MLB Playoffs

MLB's playoff races are heating up as the regular season nears its final week. Every game matters and, as baseball fans know, magic numbers start to matter. But what the heck is a magic number and where did the term originate?

What is a magic number in MLB?

A magic number is the combination of wins a given team needs and losses by its closest competitor to mathematically clinch a goal, whether it be a playoff spot, division title or wild card spot. There are two ways a given team's magic number can decrease. Each win for a given team decreases the magic number by one. Each loss by a given team's closest competitor also decreases the magic number by one. Should a given team's closest competitor change—for instance, the second place team is surpassed by another team—the magic number will also adjust.

With the formula below, a magic number determines how close a given team is to clinching its given goal.

Games remaining +1 – (losses by second place team – losses by first place team)

Where did the term magic number first originate?

The term magic number dates back to 1947, when it was used in an article published on Sept. 12 in . Discussing the pennant race between the Yankees and Red Sox, the author wrote, "The Yankees reduced the magic number to four. That is the combination of games the Yankees must win or the Red Sox must lose in order to insure the flag for the Yankees."

Back then, a team simply needed to finish first in the American or National League to win the pennant and earn the right to play in the World Series. Magic numbers were a lot simpler to calculate back then! But the term stuck as MLB drastically changed its route to the World Series over the years, and has become a key reference point for broadcasters, pundits and fans as they follow the postseason races to the conclusion of the regular season.

Davey Johnson, Manager of World Series Champion 1986 Mets, Dead at 82

Davey Johnson, former Major League Baseball player and manager, died on Friday. He was 82.

Johnson played 13 seasons in the majors, spending the majority of his career with the Orioles, where he was a stalwart at second base. He was a part of two World Series championship teams in Baltimore, in 1966 and ‘70, and was named an All Star four times.

After leaving the Orioles, Johnson spent a few seasons with the Braves, hitting alongside Hank Aaron, before stints with the Phillies and Cubs, as well as a brief stay with the Yomiuri Giants of NPB.

Just six years after his playing career, Johnson got his first shot as a manager, taking over the top job for the Mets in 1984. He found notable success in Queens, including a World Series championship in 1986. He also became the first NL manager in history to lead his team to at least 90 wins in his first five seasons at the helm.

After his time with the Mets came to a close, Johnson briefly led the Reds, Orioles and Dodgers before leaving the game in 2000. He would return in 2011 to lead the Nationals.

The Orioles celebrated the life of Johnson with a statement.

Does Graham Gooch still hold the record for the most runs scored in a single Test?

Also: what is the highest total on the first day of any Test?

Steven Lynch29-Sep-2020Who scored a hundred in the IPL that included 11 sixes but only one four? asked David Dudgeon from Nigeria
It’s probably not a great surprise to discover that this big-hitting feat belongs to Chris Gayle: his undefeated 104 for the Kings XI Punjab against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Mohali in April 2018 contained 11 sixes and a solitary four. When Andre Russell smashed 88 not out from just 36 balls – a strike rate of 244 – for the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Chennai Super Kings in Chennai a few days earlier in 2018, he also hit 11 sixes and just one four. Sanju Samson’s recent blitz for the Rajasthan Royals against the Chennai Super Kings in Sharjah – he smacked 74 from 32 balls – contained nine sixes and one four. Was that the highest total on the first day of any Test? asked Martin Gage from Australia
Australia hurtled to 482 for 5 in 86.5 overs on the first day against South Africa in Adelaide in 2012-13, mainly thanks to Michael Clarke, who was undefeated with 224 at the close; David Warner and Michael Hussey also made centuries. There has been one higher total on the first day of a Test, also by Australia against South Africa: on the opening day of the series in Sydney in 1910-11, they ran up 494 for 6, with opener Warren Bardsley scoring 132 and skipper Clem Hill 191. South Africa bowled 99 overs that day.The most runs on any day of a Test is 588, on the second at Old Trafford in 1936. England moved from 173 for 2 overnight to 571 for 8 declared, then India made 190 without loss before the close of a day on which around 140 overs were bowled.Does Graham Gooch still hold the record for the most runs scored in a single Test? asked Amitayu Sengupta from India
The short answer is yes: Graham Gooch scored 456 runs – 333 and 123 – for England against India at Lord’s in 1990, which remains the most in a single Test. The record he broke was 380, by Greg Chappell, who made 247 not out and 133 for Australia against New Zealand in Wellington in 1973-74.Since Gooch did it, three others have made 400 or more runs in a Test: Mark Taylor (334 not out and 92 for Australia against Pakistan in Peshawar in 1998-99), Kumar Sangakkara (319 and 105 for Sri Lanka v Bangladesh in Chittagong in 2013-14), and, of course, Brian Lara (400 not out for West Indies v England in St John’s in 2003-04.Only Lara (501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston in 1994) and Hanif Mohammad (499 for Karachi v Bahawalpur in Karachi in 1958-59) have scored more runs than Gooch in any first-class match. Next comes Don Bradman, who made up for being dismissed for 3 in the first innings by making 452 not out in the second for New South Wales against Queensland in Sydney in 1929-30.Graham Gooch made 333 in the first innings against India at Lord’s in 1990, and followed it up with 123 in the second•Getty ImagesThe Bob Willis Trophy final was a five-day match – when was the last time a non-Test in England lasted five days? asked Kieren Marshall from England
The exciting inaugural (and presumably only) Bob Willis Trophy final, between Essex and Somerset at Lord’s, was the first fixture scheduled for five days in England that wasn’t a Test since the MCC Bicentenary match, also at Lord’s, in 1987. Before that, the five games between England and the Rest of the World in 1970 were all scheduled for five days. They were marketed as Test matches at the time, but were later ruled unofficial. The last county game that reached a fifth day appears to be as long ago as 1834, when Yorkshire defeated Norfolk in Sheffield. I don’t think it was scheduled as a five-day match – back then it looks as if games were usually played to a finish, and this one was badly affected by the weather.I noticed that Kamran Akmal has more stumpings than catches in T20Is. Did any other wicketkeeper manage this? asked Iftikhar Rao from Pakistan
Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal made 60 dismissals in his 58 T20Is – 28 catches and 32 stumpings. Among keepers with more than 12 dismissals, the only other one with more stumpings than catches is Mohammad Shahzad of Afghanistan, with 26 and 28.This discrepancy is much more common in women’s T20Is, where several of the leading performers have more stumpings than catches, including the top two – Alyssa Healy of Australia, and England’s Sarah Taylor, who ended up with 51 stumpings to go with just 23 catches.Use our feedback form or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions
