Winfield-Hill faces Essex showdown as Yorkshire overcome Staffordshire

Yorkshire captain continues fine form and will face future team-mates in third round of T20 Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff10-May-2025Lauren Winfield-Hill continued her fine form with a matchwinning 60 from 35 balls, and in the process set up an intriguing clash with her soon-to-be team-mates at Essex, as Yorkshire overpowered Staffordshire in the second round of the Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup.After winning the toss at Weetwood, captain Winfield-Hill found a key ally in Rebecca Duckworth, who made 51 from 54 balls, as Yorkshire set their Tier 3 opponents 177 to win.Olivia Thomas took 3 for 17 from four overs of legspin, while Claudie Cooper and Beth Langston claimed two wickets apiece as Staffordshire were bowled out for 108 off the penultimate ball of their chase.Winfield-Hill made 88 in Yorkshire’s round-one victory over Derbyshire on Monday, and was soon into her stride, hitting four boundaries in the second over, bowled by Staffs captain Lucy Shenton. She was given two chances en route to a 28-ball fifty, then picked off the first six of the innings before Georgie Harrison bowled her for 60 to end a 91-run stand with Duckworth.Staffordshire’s hopes were dented by a tight start from Yorkshire’s bowlers, who conceded nine runs in the first three overs of the chase, before offspinner Cooper struck courtesy of Winfield-Hill’s smart stumping of Helen Hughes for 3.Staffordshire recovered to 50 for 1 but fell away to 67 for 4 at the halfway mark, and never threatened thereafter. It means Yorkshire will host Tier 1 opposition for the first time when Essex visit next weekend, with Winfield-Hill due to join her opponents on loan later this season when the T20 Blast gets underway.Elsewhere, Glamorgan secured a home tie against Tier 1 side Lancashire by overcoming Sussex by 48 runs in Cardiff. Batting first, Glamorgan racked up 156 for 7 in their 20 overs, Bethan Gammon top-scoring with 41 from 30 balls. In reply, Sussex’s first two wickets fell for ducks as they were restricted to 108 for 7.Oxfordshire will host The Blaze in round three after seeing off Hertfordshire by 24 runs at St Edward’s School. Their imposing total of 191 for 7 was built on Sophie Grayson’s 48 from 37 balls, and a fast-paced finish from captain Ellie Ingram, who was unbeaten on 53 from 29. Hertfordshire battled hard, reaching 80 for 1 at the halfway mark, but could only tally 167 for 3.Leicestershire made light work of Cheshire at Grace Road, restricting their visitors to 93 before easing to victory in 12.1 overs, with Becki Brooker top-scoring with 42 from 37. Cambridgeshire, meanwhile, beat Northumberland by 18 runs at Corbridge, with Kelly Haynes’ 3 for 13 proving instrumental in their defence of 131.In Sunday’s ties, Northamptonshire overcame a dramatic top-order wobble to see off Shropshire at Shrewsbury, recovering from 50 for 6 to post 137 for 7, thanks to Mabel Reid’s 54 not out from 34 balls. In reply Shropshire were rolled aside for 66.At Butleigh Salterton, Devon saw off Suffolk in a tense 14-overs contest, eventually chasing 67 with two balls to spare. While at Wokingham, Kent marched into round three with an emphatic 47-run victory over Berkshire.

Crystal Palace make late approach to sign 19-cap defender alongside Canvot

Crystal Palace are ready to embark on an adventure in the Europa Conference League and have now made an approach to bring another talented defender to Selhurst Park with Jaydee Canvot.

Crystal Palace set to sign Toulouse defender Jaydee Canvot

After qualifying for the Europa Conference League, Crystal Palace are set to sign Canvot from Toulouse and only the final documents remain before he will officially be unveiled.

Revealing the news on social media platform X, Fabrizio Romano stated: “Crystal Palace agree deal to sign French centre back Jaydee Canvot after exclusive story revealed last week. CPFC finalising documents exchange with Toulouse. Here we go.”

Jaydee Canvot in action for Toulouse against PSG.

Seeking to bolster further up the pitch, Crystal Palace could also look to strike a deal for Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson before the window closes after capturing Yeremy Pino from Villarreal.

Coming in to replace Eze, Pino said on their website: “I’m very happy to be here. It is a dream of mine to come to the Premier League, to a historic club like Crystal Palace, and I hope that I can help the team.”

Of course, speculation over Marc Guehi and a proposed move to Liverpool refuses to die down, and it remains to be seen whether anything will advance after the Eagles booked their place in the Conference League league phase after defeating Fredrikstad FK.

Crystal Palace now "enter" to hijack Wolves move for "fabulous" £17m ace

The Eagles are lining up a swoop for a new midfielder.

ByDominic Lund Aug 28, 2025

AZ Alkmaar, Dynamo Kiev, KUPS, Strasbourg, Aek Larnaca and Shelbourne await in the competition proper, offering a realistic chance of progression for the South London club as they aim to make inroads continentally.

With that in mind, Crystal Palace have made an approach for a reputable defender who could arrive on loan before the window closes, per recent reports.

Crystal Palace make late approach for Mohammed Salisu

According to Ed Aarons on X, Crystal Palace have made a loan approach to sign AS Monaco defender Mohammed Salisu to bolster their pool of options in defence.

With their pursuit of Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji still ongoing amid interest from Galatasaray and Bayer Leverkusen, it appears that the Eagles have moved the dial towards other players who could enrich their backline.

Labelled “phenomenal” by Danny Murphy, Salisu scored three times in 24 appearances across all competitions last season and won 66 duels in Ligue 1, per Fotmob.

Formerly of Southampton, the 19-cap Ghana international would arrive with Premier League experience under his belt and offers stability should Guehi leave before next Monday’s deadline.

Seemingly part of a moving sequence of events, it will be intriguing to see if their pursuit of Akanji is now abandoned, given Canvot is set to sign on at Selhurst Park.

Club "want to sell" £50m forward to Tottenham, Thomas Frank also keen

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank unceremoniously missed out on his second playmaker of the summer on Wednesday evening, so he is in dire need of some good news when it comes to recruitment.

Despite Spurs’ very advanced talks for Eberechi Eze, Arsenal swooped in to hijack Daniel Levy’s negotiations after Kai Havertz’s injury, and they swiftly shook hands on a deal with Palace overnight.

Tottenham were believed to have a verbal pact in place with Palace and agreed personal terms with Eze, so it looked like a matter of time before the north Londoners welcomed him to N17.

However, the decision ultimately came down to Eze, as both Spurs and Arsenal were prepared to meet Palace’s demands at club level.

The England international chose Arsenal due to his long-standing connection with them through his boyhood academy years at the club (Alasdair Gold), with Frank and Levy now back to square one in their pursuit of a number 10.

They’ve been in this position before this summer, with Morgan Gibbs-White also failing to seal what was once a very advanced move to Tottenham after Nottingham Forest blocked the deal.

With Spurs’ mission to sign a James Maddison replacement now set to continue with just 12 days to go until the transfer deadline on September 1, the Lilywhites also have other positions they need to reinforce.

Frank believes that Tottenham actually need two number 10s after Maddison’s long-term injury, but whether the Dane gets his wish is another matter.

Elsewhere, it is reliably reported that Spurs also want to sign a new winger and centre-back (Michael Bridge).

Brentford captain Nathan Collins and Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie are among Tottenham’s defensive targets, while Man City winger Savinho is still being chased by Spurs despite Pep Guardiola’s side blocking the deal as of now (Fabrizio Romano).

Believe it or not, Brentford striker Yoane Wissa may also remain a possibility too.

Brentford "want to sell" Yoane Wissa to Tottenham as they delay Newcastle deal

According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, there is a feeling behind-the-scenes that the Bees are delaying their deal with Newcastle, having just rejected a second bid for the Congolese, because Brentford “want to sell” Wissa to Tottenham instead – due to their relationship with Frank.

The Dane would also be keen on signing his ex-star. However, any move for Wissa is dependent on revitalised centre-forward Richarlison leaving and a club meeting his minimum £50m valuation.

The Brazilian was actually offered as a makeweight in talks for Eze, as per this report, but that now won’t be happening.

Perhaps if they can offer out Richarlison in part-exchange for another playmaker, the door could reopen for Wissa, but for now, the 29-year-old has his “heart set” on a move to St. James’ Park.

He would be an excellent replacement for Richarlison, scoring 19 goals in the Premier League last season and earning plenty of praise from Frank in the past.

Marsh repels Queensland after Western Australia's 98-run lead

From 4 for 301, Queensland lost 6 for 66 in the first innings to be dismissed for 367 with Gannon picking up a five-for

Test hopeful Cameron Bancroft fell for a duck to cap an untimely double failure, but Western Australia batters Mitchell Marsh and Hilton Cartwright repelled a Queensland rally late on day three in the Sheffield Shield. After gaining a 98-run lead, WA slumped to 47 for 3 in their second innings before Marsh and Cartwright combined for an unbroken 59-run partnership.Batting at No.4 as a specialist batter, Marsh played mostly watchfully but did occasionally bludgeon the ball in trademark style. He finished 40 not out, while Cartwright was unbeaten on 19 to get WA back on track after Bancroft fell in the first over. The leading Shield batter over the past two seasons, Bancroft has been a model of consistency. He last played Test cricket in 2019, overlooked earlier in the year after David Warner retired, and hoped to push his case for a return with allrounder Cameron Green facing a long stint on the sidelines due to a back injury. But once again he succumbed to quick Michael Neser after nicking off in an almost identical dismissal to his golden duck in the first innings.”It’s unfortunate timing,” WA coach Adam Voges said of Bancroft post play. “I’m sure he would have loved to have scored some runs in this game. It wasn’t to be, but he has scored a lot over the last few years.”Cameron Bancroft walks off after bagging a pair•Getty Images

No.3 Jayden Goodwin, who also fell first ball in the first innings, avoided the same fate as Bancroft but on 18 slashed seamer Jack Wildermuth to gully.Captain Sam Whiteman was unable to back up his brilliant century in the first innings after playing an uncharacteristically loose shot to edge debutant quick Tom Straker to second slip. It was the 19-year-old Straker’s maiden first-class wicket and he impressed in his five-over spell with fiery bowling. The flurry of wickets in the back half of the day has raised the prospect of a result after the match had appeared to be headed for a dull draw. With the surface flattening considerably since the early day one fireworks, Jack Clayton and Ben McDermott batted with relative ease in the first session against the old ball.WA relied on offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli, who celebrated his 27th birthday on day one, but he was thwarted on a surface providing little assistance.Whiteman turned to the left-arm spin of Cooper Connolly, but Clayton reverse swept to good effect as Queensland chipped away at WA’s massive first innings total of 465.The match went through a lull until the second new ball and quickly sparked back to life when quick Cameron Gannon had Clayton caught down the leg side by diving wicketkeeper Josh Inglis for 85.McDermott appeared to get Queensland back on track either side of lunch until falling lbw to Cartwright for 68. It sparked a collapse with Queensland losing 6 for 66 as the ball started to shoot through off divots.Playing against his former team, Gannon left off from his impressive finish last season when he was an unexpected hero in WA’s Shield triumph. Unleashing an unnerving line and length, he was the pick of the bowlers to finish with 5 for 57 from 25.2 overs.Recruit Brody Couch had a mixed debut for WA after crossing over from Victoria in the off-season. He was lively at times, the fastest of WA’s trio of quicks clocking at 140 kpm, and did unfurl a short-pitched barrage to liven a sedate period of play.Couch did struggle for consistency, conceding 86 runs from 21 overs, but claimed a maiden wicket for WA when he clean bowled Wildermuth for 24.Marsh did not bowl as expected and spent most of his time in the slips, while he also occasionally helped carry the drinks.

David Bedingham, Colin Ackermann centuries put Durham in control

Pair’s unbroken stand of 268 sets fifth-wicket record for Durham in first-class cricket

ECB Reporters Network10-Sep-2024David Bedingham made his third Championship century of the season against Lancashire and also passed a thousand first-class runs for this campaign to help Durham take control of their Vitality County Championship match at Chester-le-Street.Having restricted Lancashire to 228 all out in their first innings, the home side were 367 for 4 at the close, a lead of 139, with Bedingham on 177 not out and Colin Ackermann unbeaten on 111. The pair’s unbroken stand of 268 has already set a fifth-wicket record for Durham in first-class cricket. The one positive aspect of the day’s play from a Lancastrian perspective was the bowling of the Trinidadian, Anderson Phillip, who took 2 for 86 on his debut, but it now looks as though the visitors will face a battle to avoid a third Championship defeat in succession. In the morning session, Lancashire’s last four wickets added a further 51 runs to their overnight total. Matty Hurst was run out for 90 after a mix-up with Tom Bailey and Ben Raine took his fifth wicket of the innings when he had Phillip leg before wicket for 2.Raine finished with 5 for 44, his best return of the season, but crucially for their hopes of staying in Division One, Lancashire failed to earn a batting bonus point for the third successive match.Replying to the visitors’ modest 228, Durham’s batters encountered their own problems against the new Kookaburra ball. Ben McKinney gave Phillip his first wicket for his new county when he played on for 8 and Scott Borthwick’s indeterminate waft at a ball from Bailey edged a catch to Hurst with the home skipper on 9.Bedingham and Alex Lees took Durham to lunch on 46 for 2 and the pair batted serenely for nearly an hour after the resumption, at which point the home side were rocked by two lbw decisions in eight balls.Lees fell to Phillip for 43 and then Ollie Robinson was trapped on the crease by Tom Aspinwall for four to leave Durham on 99 for 4. Bedingham and Ackermann prevented Lancashire making any more breakthroughs and Durham reached tea on 178 for four, only 50 runs in arrears.Shortly after the resumption, Bedingham reached his thousand first-class runs for the season with a single off Tom Hartley and it was noted that nearly a quarter of them had been taken off the Red Rose’s attack. But worse was to follow for Keaton Jennings’ bowlers as Bedingham reached his sixth Championship century in just 15 innings this season when he stroked Hartley to long-on for another single. The South African had reached three figures off 143 balls with 11 fours and a six and there had hardly been a moment in his innings when he hadn’t looked in complete control.Nor was there any point in the evening session when Lancashire looked like taking a wicket. For long periods, Jennings posted five men in the deep and appeared content to cut off the boundaries. The fifth-wicket stand partnership passed 200 when Bedingham pulled a lifter from Aspinwall through midwicket for four. While almost all other Championship games in the country were interrupted by rain, home supporters sat in the sun and waited to see if Ackermann would reach his century and if the Durham pair would eclipse the county’s record fifth-wicket partnership of 254 set by Ned Eckersley and Bedingham himself against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2021.They were not disappointed. Three overs from the close, Ackermann got to his hundred off 165 balls and a new fifth-wicket record was set when Bedingham stroked Bailey to deep square leg off the next delivery.

More exciting than Inamura & Osmand: Celtic could sign "jaw-dropping" star

Celtic are reportedly closing in on the signing of Albirex Niigata centre-back Hayato Inamura to bolster their options at the heart of the defence ahead of next season.

The 23-year-old defender, who can also operate as a left-back when needed, is set to undergo a medical this week before being unveiled as a new signing.

Brendan Rodgers already has Auston Trusty and Liam Scales as first-team options in the left-sided centre-back role, though, and Kieran Tierney as the first-choice left-back.

Liam Scales in action for Celtic.

This means that Inamura, who has started 15 games in the J1 League this year, could come in as a back-up option initially, with a view to developing into a key performer in the future.

Celtic sign new striker

As well as closing in on a move for Inamura, the Scottish Premiership champions have already completed a deal to sign a new centre-forward.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Celtic have officially confirmed the arrival of Callum Osmand from Premier League side Fulham, as his contract with the Premier League team is due to expire this week.

The 19-year-old star has put pen to paper on a four-year contract with the Scottish giants, and is now set to compete with Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah for a place in the side next season.

Osmand did not make a single senior appearance for Fulham during his time with the Cottagers, but did rack up an impressive haul of 20 goals in 35 matches at U21 level.

Harley Mills in action for Peterborough United.

Celtic could land an even more exciting than both Osmand and Inamura, though, if they swoop to sign Peterborough United full-back Harley Mills.

Why Celtic should sign Harley Mills

With both Osmand and Inamura, the Hoops are clearly looking to pad out their squad depth with promising young players who can start as back-ups, but with the potential for them to develop into stars.

They must follow that trend by pursuing a deal for Mills, whom they reportedly made an approach for earlier this summer, as he could be an excellent addition to the team.

The 19-year-old left-back, who scored a “jaw-dropping” free-kick in the EFL Trophy final, would come in with more first-team experience than Osmand, who has not played a single senior game to date, having played 20 times for Peterborough to date.

He would also arrive with a more exciting profile than Inamura, who is a central defender who has scored one goal and provided one assist in his senior career in Japan, as a left-back who can provide quality in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, Mills produced fantastic performances for the Posh on their run to winning the EFL Trophy in the 2024/25 campaign, with 3 goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in six matches, whilst winning the majority of his duels.

These statistics suggest that the teenage talent could be a left-back who can provide quality at the top end of the pitch whilst also being solid and reliable defensively, as an exciting understudy to Tierney.

Therefore, Mills could be a great addition to the squad as depth at the back for Rodgers, whilst having the potential to replace the Scotland international in the future.

Based on his performances for Peterborough at senior level, delivering in the biggest stadium in England, he would arrive with more proven quality in than Inamura and Osmand, which could make him a more exciting signing for the club if they decide to swoop for him.

Arsenal could now make bid for £51m Gabriel and Saliba "hybrid" within days

Arsenal could now make an opening bid for a Gabriel and William Saliba “hybrid” in the coming days, according to a report.

Gunners eyeing new centre-back amid Saliba uncertainty

Gabriel has recently reaffirmed his commitment to Mikel Arteta’s project by agreeing a new deal, but Saliba is yet to sign a new contract, amid widespread reports that Real Madrid are interested in signing the Frenchman.

Arsenal's WilliamSalibaapplauds fans after the match

Despite signing AFC Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen, Madrid retain an interest in Saliba, with the 24-year-old thought to be a dream signing, and they remain attentive to his contract situation.

As such, while Arteta will surely be determined to keep hold of the centre-back, it may be a wise move to start thinking about potential replacements, and the north Londoners could soon make an opening bid for a Liga Portugal star.

Twist: "Extraordinary" £60m+ star now plans to snub Man Utd to join Arsenal

The Gunners have received a boost in their pursuit of a forward, who Andrea Berta has already held talks to sign.

Indeed, according to a report from A Bola (via Arsenal News), the Gunners may submit a proposal for Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande in the coming days, having recently learned that he will be available for a fee below his release clause.

Although Diomande has a £67m release clause in his contract, Sporting recently informed Crystal Palace they would be willing to sanction a departure for £51m, but there are a number of other top clubs in the race for his signature.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich also said to be ‘very attentive’ to the 21-year-old’s situation, highlighting just how highly he is regarded.

Diomande could be a Gabriel and Saliba "hybrid"

Gabriel and Saliba have struck up quite the partnership at the heart of the Arsenal defence, although Jamie Carragher has suggested the France international is not the same when playing alongside Jakub Kiwior.

Arsenal's WilliamSalibareacts

Carragher said: “I think Saliba is the better player but Gabriel is the better leader, and he needs to bring that to his game if he wants to get to the levels of Virgil van Dijk. Saliba needs Gabriel. Since Gabriel has come out of the team, that’s not the same Saliba I’m watching.”

Given that the two defenders complement each other, it should be exciting news that the Gunners are in the race for Diomande, as he has been described as a “hybrid between Gabriel and Saliba” by data analyst Ben Mattinson.

Despite being just 21-years-old, the Ivorian already has 101 first-team appearances to his name for Sporting, indicating he could slot right into Arteta’s backline, while journalist Zach Lowy has been left very impressed by his performances in the past.

Of course, Arsenal fans will be hoping that Saliba commits his future to the club, but there is no doubt that Diomande could be an exciting long-term heir.
