Tottenham favourites to appoint "exciting" manager over Bundesliga club

Tottenham Hotspur are now seen as favourites to appoint an “exciting” manager ahead of a significant Bundesliga side, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy allegedly making plans to potentially replace Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou could lead the Lilywhites to their first European final since 2019, if they manage to get past Bodo/Glimt at their freezing-cold ground in Norway on Thursday.

The prospect of a first major trophy since 2008 is also very much alive for Tottenham, but domestically, it’s been a season to forget. The north Londoners could still break their record for most Premier League losses in a single campaign, with Postecoglou’s side tasting defeat on 19 separate occasions already this term.

A succession of injuries to key players throughout 2024/2025 have severely handicapped Spurs’ chances of success, but only the three relegated sides (Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton) have lost more games overall, which simply isn’t good enough for a ‘big six’ side.

As a result, Postecoglou has been under the microscope, and there are reports the Australian could part ways with Tottenham regardless of their possible success in the Europa League (The Telegraph).

Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth), Marco Silva (Fulham), Thomas Frank (Brentford) and Scott Parker (Burnley) have all been mentioned as managerial candidates to replace Postecoglou in the last few weeks, alongside more high-profile names like Carlo Ancelotti, Jürgen Klopp and Xabi Alonso (GiveMeSport).

Another name who’s reportedly attracting interest from N17 is Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

Last month, German media sources indicated that Tottenham have already made contact with Glasner over a potential move (Sport Bild), but the Austrian is also a top target for RB Leipzig amid their hunt for a new manager.

Tottenham ahead of RB Leipzig in race to appoint Oliver Glasner

The Austrian is turning heads after an excellent campaign at Palace, where he’s guided the Eagles to an FA Cup final at Wembley.

The south Londoners have a chance to win their first ever major trophy under Glasner’s watch, after coming very close in 2016, when they lost the FA Cup final to Man Utd under Alan Pardew.

This hasn’t gone unnoticed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with media outlet Bild now reporting that Spurs are seen as the likelier destination for Glasner ahead of Leipzig, despite the Bundesliga side’s “concrete” talks.

Tottenham are viewed as such favourites to appoint the 50-year-old that Leipzig are already considering other targets, which makes for promising reading if you wish to see Glasner make the move across London.

The tactician also guided Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory before his switch to England, with pundit John Wenham adamant Glasner would be an “exciting” appointment.

“He was flying with Palace last season. I know they made a slow start this season, but they lost some key players. However, since then, he has rebuilt well,” said Wenham to Tottenham News.

“He is far more exciting than most names that have been linked. Therefore, he is someone I would be happy for Tottenham to appoint. I think with better players he would excel, and I find him more exciting than Marco Silva or Thomas Frank, to be honest.”

Liverpool now ready to sell player Slot's "delighted" with after £50m+ bid

Liverpool are now thought to be willing to sell a first-team member who has “delighted” Arne Slot in 2025 despite the manager’s admiration for the player.

Liverpool eyeing new signings to replace Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah

The Reds look set for a hectic transfer window this summer, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah all yet to pen contract extensions.

It looks likely that Alexander-Arnold will depart for Real Madrid, and there are question marks over Van Dijk and Salah respective futures. As a result, Liverpool have been on the search for potential replacements for the star trio.

Slot has already held talks over a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong, whereas Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund may replace Van Dijk and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo is identified as a replacement for Salah.

However, there could be more Anfield exits on the cards ahead of the 2025/26 season, with Liverpool open to selling one player in particular.

Liverpool ready to sell Harvey Elliott after £50m+ Newcastle offer

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool look ready to sell Harvey Elliott this summer, amid interest from Newcastle United.

It is believed that the Reds are ‘willing to cash in in order to bolster what is already a significant transfer kitty’, whereas Elliott himself ‘may have to accept he will need to find a new club if determined to be a regular starter’.

Liverpool player Harvey Elliott

This comes after claims of a £50m+ offer being submitted by Newcastle for Elliott, and TEAMtalk suggest the Magpies and Eddie Howe are indeed keen. Slot admitted at the beginning of the year that he was “delighted” with the midfielder’s display from the bench back in January against Brentford.

“I was delighted by his performance when he came on. It’s so nice for me, for us as a team, that I have players that can impact the game on the bench as well.”

Slot praised Elliott again just last month, days after his winner at PSG by helping Liverpool defeat Southampton at Anfield.

“He came in 15 minutes before the end again and showed how important he is for this team and the others as well. He trains really, he does this and – I said it many times about Wata and I can say the same about Harvey – he hardly gets any playing time but he keeps on going and then when your moment comes, you can finally show your quality.

“And that is the biggest compliment I can give him, but also the biggest compliment is what he brings to the team is that he just keeps on going because I have experienced more than enough players who are in the same position as him or Wata and they start to do less and less and when you do play them you (journalists) probably don’t ask me why I don’t play them.”

However, despite Slot’s high thoughts on Elliott, it looks as if he could be on the way out of Anfield relatively soon going off the recent transfer update.

Watch out Cucurella: Chelsea in pole position to sign “exceptional” £53m star

It feels like Chelsea’s momentum is starting to build this season.

Enzo Maresca’s side had a few poor results earlier in the campaign, but have just come off a week that saw them demolish Barcelona in the Champions League.

Then, a few days later, they held Premier League leaders Arsenal to a 1-1 draw, despite being a man down for over half the game.

One of Chelsea’s best players in this uptick in form has been Marc Cucurella, but if reports are to be believed, he could soon have some extra competition for his place in the team.

Chelsea target Cucurella rival

With the winter transfer window now so close, Chelsea have unsurprisingly been linked with a huge number of players.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For example, the West Londoners have been one of several sides linked with an audacious move for Juventus’ Kenan Yıldız, and if that wasn’t exciting enough, Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga has also been touted for a £70m move to Stamford Bridge.

However, while these two players would most certainly improve Maresca’s squad, if not his starting lineup, they cannot really be described as competition for Cucurella, unlike Castello Lukeba.

Yes, according to a recent report from Caught Offside, Chelsea are one of a number of teams interested in the French defender.

Alongside the Blues, the report claims Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United are all keen on the 22-year-old, but the good news is that it is the West Londoners who are leading the race at the moment.

Interestingly, while he has a release clause worth up to €90m in his contract, which is about £79m, the report has revealed that RB Leipzig may be willing to let him leave for around €60m, which is just £53m.

It could still be a complicated transfer to get over the line, but with how talented Lukeba is, one Chelsea should fight for, especially as he could provide more competition for Cucurella.

How Lukeba compares to Cucurella

Now, the first thing to say is that it feels incredibly unlikely that any defender would come into this Chelsea side in January and immediately displace Cucurella.

After all, the Spaniard is one of the first names on the team sheet at the moment.

However, all great teams need serious competition in all areas of the pitch, and by signing Lukeba, Maresca would be ensuring that he has that at left-back and extra cover at centre-back.

Yes, the Frenchman has spent most of his career playing in the centre of a defence, but he has got some experience out on the left, and players like Jorrel Hato, Jurrien Timber and even Riccardo Calafiori all prove that centre-backs can transition to become more of a full-back.

Moreover, respected analyst-turned-Como scout Ben Mattinson has even described the 22-year-old as a “perfect LB/LCB hybrid for the modern game.”

Mattinon goes on to describe the Frenchman as “defensively exceptional,” pointing out his “outstanding timing of last man tackles” as one of the reasons why.

However, he’s not just a lockdown defender, as u23 scout Antonio Mango has described him as someone who “excels on the ball” and has “that line breaking ability” so many managers want from their full-backs and centre-backs.

With all that said, his most significant advantage over Cucurella, and the reason he could seriously challenge him for game time, is his defensive solidity, and the numbers back that up.

According to FBref, the Leipzig star outperforms the Blues ace in most defensive metrics, including ball recoveries, aerial duels won, blocks, interceptions and clearances.

Ultimately, Cucurella’s place in Chelsea’s starting lineup is guaranteed at the moment, but were Maresca to get his hands on Lukeba, he could have some serious competition.

Tottenham eye 'dream' move for striker likened to Diego Costa after Frank request

Tottenham’s first transfer window with their new-look, reshuffled boardroom will be a very intriguing one, and a striker is believed to be at the very top of their priority list.

Ever since replacing Ange Postecoglou in the summer, new manager Thomas Frank has been starved of a reliable focal point up front.

Dominic Solanke, who Spurs signed for a club-record £65 million fee last year, has struggled with injury problems that have limited his involvement to just 49 minutes so far this campaign. The Englishman suffered a ‘minor’ ankle problem at the beginning of 25/26, which eventually required surgery, and he’s still on the comeback trail.

Solanke is set to miss this weekend’s pivotal North London derby against Arsenal and won’t be available for their crunch Champions League tie against PSG either, with Frank forced to rely on the out-of-form Richarlison, who’s attracted criticism for his inconsistency.

The Brazilian is a shoo-in to start against PSG next week given Mathys Tel wasn’t named in Frank’s 22-man Champions League squad. Tel, according to some reports, is said to be ‘unhappy’ in London and keen to leave Spurs in January, with Roma taking a serious interest in the Frenchman (La Gazzetta dello Sport).

Solanke’s fitness woes, Tel’s dissatisfaction and Richarlison’s form have fueled speculation that a new striker could arrive at the turn of the year, and Spurs are being linked with a few interesting names.

Chief among them is Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney, who scored 20 Premier League goals in his best campaign at Brentford whilst working under Frank.

The tactician has apparently held ‘direct’ talks with Toney about a January move to Spurs, according to some reports, while others believe that the Lilywhites are in pole position to sign him at the turn of the year after ‘preliminary’ negotiations (TEAMtalk).

While links to the 29-year-old are rife given his obvious connection to Tottenham’s manager, co-sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange are considering other options.

Tottenham eye 'dream' move for FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa

As per TEAMtalk, FC Porto talisman Samu Aghehowa is a ‘dream’ target for the club.

Sources believe the 21-year-old, who’s bagged nine goals in 14 appearances already this season, fits perfectly into Frank’s long-term vision. Spurs’ boss is also said to have ‘repeatedly’ emphasised his desire for a physically imposing, mobile striker capable of pressing aggressively and connecting play.

Insiders within Tottenham’s recruitment structure apparently think of Aghehowa as the “younger, longer-term” striker successor they genuinely desire, despite ongoing interest in Toney as a potential 2026 alternative.

Standing at a lofty 6 foot 4 with surprising pace for his height, the Spaniard has even been compared to former Chelsea star Diego Costa during his prime years, thankfully not the version we saw at Wolves.

However, this all being said, a January move appears very unlikely.

Portuguese sources state that Porto are refusing to entertain winter offers, especially as they pursue a first Primeira Liga title in six years. President Andre Villas-Boas has reportedly informed intermediaries that Samu is not for sale “at any price in the winter”, casting major doubt on Spurs’ ability to prise him away mid-season.

Porto have also set an £71 million asking price for Aghehowa, meaning the north Londoners may have to fork out a new club-record fee. With that in mind, Frank and Lange will apparently continue to monitor Aghehowa’s development whilst maintaining Toney as a backup option.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Chelsea once came ‘very close’ to signing the forward, and he’s a player with ‘huge potential’.

India gain an edge. England have the lead. What will happen next?

Big picture: Nice and spicy

Who doesn’t love a bit of rancour with their Test cricket? Admit it. You’re every bit as hooked as the players themselves. Emotional over-investment has been the theme of the week, from England’s graceless antics at the fag-end of the Manchester Test to Gautam Gambhir’s foul-mouthed altercation with the Oval groundsman. The stakes, and the tempers, are on a knife-edge as the series finale looms, and no matter what else one might think of the behaviour on display, one thing is for sure: there will be no going through the motions for the coming five days. This contest has developed a context all of its own.It is also shaping up as an extraordinary opportunity for India to turn the tables in a series that looked done and dusted when Chris Woakes reduced them to 0 for 2 in their second innings at Old Trafford. If it wasn’t clear by the end of that game, it seems more obvious now; England’s grumpy attitude towards India’s milestone-hunting stemmed from their own frustration and exhaustion after laying everything on the line for 143 overs. They had gone into that final innings expecting to win the series with a game to spare, and maybe coast into this fifth Test with a chance to relax and experiment. Instead, they arrived at that controversial final hour with a very real sense of vulnerability in the air. Sure enough, here they are now, starting again from scratch just four days later, with a rejigged bowling attack and, as it turns out, without the one man whose efforts had hauled them into that winning position in the first place.Ben Stokes clearly knew, even as he was imploring Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to shake his hand, that his shoulder injury was a very significant concern. His absence now transforms the agenda for both teams. At Old Trafford, England’s captain reprised the peak of his all-round powers, with a superb first-innings five-for, followed by his first Test century for more than two years. Now, however, he’s reprising a more familiar recent theme – the unavoidable fragility of a competitor whose body is struggling to keep up with his gut-busting desire.Related

  • Bumrah to miss Oval Test; Akash Deep likely to replace him

  • England quicks await acid test after two-year changing of the guard

He’ll be back – of course he will – in good time for the Ashes, but another six-seven weeks of rehab is not how Stokes hoped to finish his most prolific series as a Test bowler. Even so, Brendon McCullum’s concerns about his workload – as telegraphed from the Lord’s balcony two Tests ago – suggests that the England dressing room always feared this could be the upshot.Talking of the Ashes (as of course we must, it’s English cricket’s version of Godwin’s Law) it is fascinating how different the feel is around this fifth Test, compared to the last time a drawn Test at Old Trafford was the prelude to a series decider at The Oval. In the 2023 Ashes, England were the team on the rampage – high on their own supply, as has been standard for the past three years – but as convinced of their direction of travel as they seem a little spooked by it right now.Even though England lead the series, India’s batters make up the top four run-scorers so far, with 11 centuries to England’s seven. Notwithstanding the Bazball belief in bowling long and backing their batters to match any given innings in double time, there is bound to be a cumulative effect to those long and fruitless hours in the field on the psyche of the attack, let alone their stamina. The pitches, ever a talking point even before Lee Fortis got involved in the discussions, have been flat and unforgiving with only session’s worth of exceptions, while Woakes’ returns – 10 wickets at 52.80, compared to his home average of 21.59 from 34 previous Tests – have epitomised the underlying toothlessness of England’s attack.0:35

Watch – Gambhir’s heated exchange with Surrey groundsman

India aren’t without concerns on that front too, of course. They need 20 wickets to secure a share of this series, but their own attack was utterly devoid of ideas in England’s only innings at Old Trafford, where Joe Root and Stokes controlled the agenda after a flying start from Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley. Jasprit Bumrah will not play, which puts the onus squarely on the returning Akash Deep and Mohammad Siraj – who claimed 17 wickets between them in that memorable win at Edgbaston.Glib though it is to say it, however, desire may be the deciding factor in this fascinating series. To claim that the series is descending into foul-tempered anarchy would be doing a disservice to the genuine respect that emerged after England’s agonisingly tight victory at Lord’s earlier this month. But, there’s also no doubt – to channel each side’s inner Kevin Keegan – that each would “love it” if they beat the other this week. It may require the straining of several sinews for either side to get over that finishing line, especially if the forecast for the back-end of the Test is correct. But unfortunately for England, their key piece of sinew has already been sidelined by prior exertion. It’s up for grabs now.

Form guide

England: DWLWW
India: DLWLL

In the spotlight: Jacob Bethell and Washington Sundar

For most of the summer – especially after Ollie Pope quietened his doubters with a century in the first Test – it looked as though Jacob Bethell would remain on the outside looking in, his reputation growing given the instant impact he had made as an emergency No. 3 in New Zealand last year. Now, not unlike the last man in this set-up who was forced to wait his turn, Harry Brook in 2022, Bethell’s chance has come in the final Test of the summer, and the rewards for seizing it could be immense. For it’s not just his precocious batting that will come into the spotlight this week. Bethell’s potential as a spin option will be explored in the absence of Shoaib Bashir and Liam Dawson, which – in certain circumstances during the Ashes – might offer him another route into England’s XI. For the time being, though, his primary task will be to hit the ground running in a series that has been dominated by the bat.2:33

Did England go too far with handshake-gate frustrations?

Washington Sundar’s stock has risen immensely in the course of this campaign. His inclusion for the second Test at Edgbaston looked at first like a conservative choice, with the connoisseur’s preference being the more dramatic wristspin option of Kuldeep Yadav. But then Washington chipped in with a vital 42 from No. 8 that set up a winning total, before his four-wicket onslaught at Lord’s brought his primary suit back into focus. Now he’s a Test centurion, having been a focus of England’s ire in those fraught final overs at Old Trafford. And, in the absence of Rishabh Pant, that resolve could be vital to India’s hopes of squaring the series, with Pant’s No. 5 berth up for grabs once more.

Team news: Stokes ruled out with grade three tear

“Pain is just an emotion,” Stokes said after the fourth Test. Grade Three tears of the shoulder, on the other hand, are a more significant problem. The captain’s absence from this contest is a shattering blow to England’s hopes of closing out the campaign, not least because he has been their best and most penetrative bowler all summer long. Bethell slots in for his first Test of the summer, and given that he and Root form a passable spin partnership, Dawson is the fall guy. His absence also reflects England’s need to shore up their seam attack in Stokes’ absence. Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer were off-colour at Old Trafford; Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue complete a significantly changed line-up.England: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope (capt), 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Jacob Bethell, 7 Jamie Smith (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Gus Atkinson, 10 Jamie Overton, 11 Josh Tongue2:08

How do India’s five regulars cope with the quick turnaround?

Bumrah is set to be rested by India’s medical team after a tough outing in Manchester, where he bowled 33 overs and was taken for more than 100 runs in an innings for the first time. Akash Deep, unavailable last week, is the likely candidate to replace him. Anshul Kamboj, uninspiring on debut, is expected to make way too – potentially for Prasidh Krishna, who was expensive at the start of the series – while Arshdeep Singh, who split his webbing between the third and fourth Tests, is fit again too. A decision needs to be taken on Shardul Thakur, who was neither one thing nor the other at Old Trafford. With India facing a must-win game, is it time at last to unleash the wiles of Kuldeep? Dhruv Jurel, a familiar face after his substitute keeping in the last two Tests, is this time officially included, with Pant ruled out with that broken foot.India (probable): 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 KL Rahul, 3 B Sai Sudharsan, 4 Shubman Gill (capt), 5 Washington Sundar, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Dhruv Jurel (wk), 8 Shardul Thakur/Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Akash Deep, 10 Prasidh Krishna/Arshdeep Singh, 11 Mohammed Siraj

Pitch and conditions: Grass left on the pitch

Who dares to get close enough to the pitch to analyse it fully, in light of the furore that kicked off on Monday? The surface on match eve still had a green tinge, although plenty can change in 24 hours. The weather, for the most part, looks warm, although showers are forecast for Thursday afternoon, while the back end of the match could see further downpours.Ollie Pope has won three and lost one of his four previous Tests as captain•Richard Heathcote/Getty Images

Stats and trivia: Seamers’ paradise

  • India have won twice in 15 previous visits to The Oval, in 1971 and 2021, which was also their most recent match against England at the venue. They lost their last visit there, against Australia in the World Test Championship final in 2023.
  • With 722 runs in the series so far, including four centuries, and a maximum of two innings to come, Shubman Gill has a range of batting records in his sights. Only one man, Clyde Walcott in 1955, has previously made five hundreds in a single series, while no player has passed 800 in a series since Mark Taylor in the 1989 Ashes. Don Bradman did it three times: his all-time record of 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes remains 252 runs away, which is less than Gill’s highest score of the series so far.
  • Pope has won three and lost one of his four previous Tests as captain, against Sri Lanka and Pakistan between August and October last year. In a microcosm of his career, he has a top-score of 154, on this ground against Sri Lanka, and 37 runs in six remaining innings.
  • Since the start of 2023, there have been 22 first-class matches at The Oval, in which seamers have taken 617 wickets and spinners have taken 79. This season alone, seamers have accounted for 131 wickets out of 150.
  • For 21 consecutive first-class matches, dating back to April 2023, teams winning the toss at The Oval have chosen to bowl first – including India against Australia in the WTC final.

Quotes

“Decisions like this are not straightforward. You have to let the emotion settle before you make a clear, firm decision. I did turn up to training to see if I could go as a batter, but it wouldn’t be a sensible call to make, considering how much worse it could be by going out there.”
Ben Stokes explains why he’s not risking his fitness for this match“We have played four matches already in this series, and nobody had stopped us from watching the pitch. All of us have played so much cricket, [and] we have gone to the pitches so many times – including the coaches and captain. I don’t know what the fuss was about.”

Justin Greaves: ‘This is where I always wanted to be’

Allrounder Justin Greaves has called the progression from first-class cricket in the West Indies to Test cricket a “massive step up”.Greaves, 31, is coming off of a match-saving 202 not out against New Zealand in the first Test in Christchurch. Chasing 531, he began his innings with West Indies 72 for 4 on the fourth day. Greaves batted for nearly nine and a hours and faced 388 balls to help them survive 163.3 overs and salvage a draw. He said that learnings from conversations with Jason Holder had helped improve his game.”It [Test cricket] is a massive step up from first-class cricket in the Caribbean,” Greaves said. “It’s a lot more demanding both physically and mentally. This is where I always wanted to be – so I had to change the way I train, both strength-and-conditioning and skill-wise. Enjoying it, learning as I go along.Related

“If I can pick up some tips from the other successful allrounders around the world when we play against them, I pretty much do that. I lean on Jason Holder, who’s been around with the T20 squad when I’m here. I’ve dropped him a few messages in terms of finding out what he’s done to have the career he’s had in Test cricket so far.”Greaves was part of the West Indies Test teams that toured Australia in 2023-24 and Pakistan earlier this year. He has played 12 Tests so far. Travelling to and playing in different countries has required him to get stronger, eat better, and learn to be patient.”Everything had to change because it’s not easy being on the road [in] different conditions,” Greaves said. “When you’re at home, it’s pretty easy because you know pretty much all the conditions in the Caribbean, and then, coming overseas, playing cricket in Australia and then to Pakistan, and here now, in New Zealand, everything is different.”Adapting to that in the gym, getting stronger, eating better in terms of food, putting on a bit more muscle as well, and being a bit stronger; skill-wise, adding a bit more to my game; [while] batting – being a bit more patient because at this level, everything is not given to you. Bowling-wise, being the allrounder in the team, you can be bowling, and within an hour or two, you could be batting again. So, you’re putting your mind to it, and adapting to change.”Greaves will hope to build on this performance in the second Test against New Zealand in Wellington, which starts on Wednesday, with the three-match series locked at 0-0.

“But, during the season, LSG called me [for trials] only because they saw I was fully fit and performing. My focus was simple: do what I could control and if I got the chance, play as much as possible and perform.”Things were a lot more promising just two years earlier, when Mavi was among Indian cricket’s bright and upcoming fast-bowling prospects. He had broken through into the T20I setup, combining high pace and late swing. The ability to hit sixes down the order was a bonus. But six T20Is and seven wickets later, his top-flight career hit a roadblock.Mavi noticed his pace drop. He couldn’t generate the old zip off the pitch. And without swing, he lost another key ally of his trade. He watched IPL 2023 come and go on the Gujarat Titans’ bench, despite being a costly INR 6 crore pick.Although disappointed, Mavi looked to the upcoming domestic season as a chance to prove himself all over again. But just as he began preparing, there was another blow: a side strain followed by a rib stress fracture ended his 2023-24 campaign before it had even begun. The final sting came when the BCCI dropped him from its targeted pool of players.Mavi was down, emotionally and otherwise, but not all was lost. LSG picked him at the auction for INR 6.4 crore despite the setbacks. If fit, there was hope he would be in the mix to challenge for a spot in the XI, considering they had traded Avesh Khan to Rajasthan Royals. But to Mavi’s misfortune, he pulled up with an injury during a fitness test prior to the start of the season.

“Since last year, I’ve been able to play without discomfort. That’s been the biggest win. Bowling-wise, I’ve put in a lot of work on my action and because of that, my rhythm feels better, the pace hasn’t dropped”Shivam Mavi

Determined to break the cycle, Mavi turned to former India team physio Ashish Kaushik. He checked in to Kaushik’s private facility in Bengaluru, dissecting his biomechanics and rebuilding from scratch. It took a year of working on his action and fine-tuning to be fully fit and ready.”Every time I increased my workload, the stress reaction on my side became evident,” Mavi says. “It wasn’t random. It was because of my action. I used to fall away on the left side while delivering. As the spell went on, it became worse. That’s what caused the strain.”Ashish sir helped me understand that the flexion on my side was the reason. Now my body weight doesn’t go sideways, even at the end of a long spell. Until that point, no one had looked at my action to this extent before.”The results have been encouraging: for the first time in years, Mavi says he is pain-free.”I can bowl long spells without discomfort. I can push my body again. I’ve understood fitness is something you need to constantly work on,” he says. “Since last year, I’ve been able to play without discomfort. That’s been the biggest win. Bowling-wise, I’ve put in a lot of work on my action and because of that, my rhythm feels better, the pace hasn’t dropped.”Once part of India’s future in fast bowling, Shivam Mavi (as well as Umran Malik) have fallen behind in the race•BCCINot just the physical pain, the lengthy rehab also tested him in other ways. Alone in Bengaluru, away from family, doing the same set of drills every day, monotony hit him hard. “It was irritating,” he says with a chuckle. “It was mentally challenging. But I kept telling myself ‘when my chance comes, I shouldn’t let it slip’. That thought kept me going.”The Mavi of today is different from the one that broke down often in the past. His speeds are back close to 145kph, his action looks smoother, and his rhythm has returned. In the UP T20 League, he’s been in stride, not just as a new-ball bowler, but as an allrounder. His first six games have brought him ten wickets and a 21-ball 54 in which he hit six sixes. “Earlier, I used to think I’m just a bowler. Now, I work equally on my batting,” he says. “In T20s, when you come in at the death, you don’t have time. You have to hit from ball one. I’ve been preparing for that role.”After having played the entire 2024-25 season without breaking down, Mavi couldn’t have asked for a better lead-in to the upcoming domestic season. For now, he’s focused on continuing to push the bar at the UP T20, but doesn’t hesitate when asked about the bigger picture.”An India comeback,” he says. “Whichever match I play, I want to focus solely on that and do well. If I keep doing that, the India comeback will take care of itself.”

Giants' Landen Roupp Carted Off Field After Being Hit in Knee by Line Drive

Giants pitcher Landen Roupp has had a solid season in 2025—but on Wednesday, his outing was destined to end early.

Padres center fielder Ramon Laureano struck Roupp directly in the knee with a line drive Wednesday night, sending the San Francisco hurler to the ground clutching his left knee. After some anxious time spent on the Petco Park grass, Roupp was removed from the premises on a cart.

In 2 1/3 innings pitched Wednesday, Roupp gave up five earned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two. He departed with his team trailing 3–0 in the bottom of the third.

Roupp, a Rocky Mount, N.C., native and UNC Wilmington product, is in his second year with the Giants. He's 7-6 in '25 with a 3.45 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings.

Veteran pitcher Joey Lucchesi replaced Roupp against his former team, navigating San Francisco out of that third inning to forget.
